Overview

The University of Minnesota Duluth is a research institution located in Minnesota’s fourth largest city. Founded in 1895 as the Duluth Normal School, this medium-sized campus for a large university has grown since its humble beginnings as a teacher’s school to offer over 150 majors and minors featuring a liberal education foundation. UMN Duluth is home to 16 athletic teams overseen by Champ the Bulldog, who took over for the original school mascot, the “Fighting Pedagogues,” or “Fighting Teachers.” Outside of academia, students can take advantage of the 244 student organizations and 50+ intramural teams and recreational activities. The western shore of Lake Superior also provides a number of off-campus opportunities, including hiking, skiing, and kayaking, while the city of Duluth itself offers shopping, dining, and entertainment.

Additional Costs
Room and Board The weighted average for room and board and other expenses is generated as follows:
  • (amount for on-campus room, board and other expenses * # of students living on-campus.
  • + amount for off-campus (with family) room, board and other expenses * # of students living off-campus with family
  • + amount for off-campus (not with family) room, board and other expenses * # of students living off-campus not with family)
divided by the total # of students. Students whose living arrangements are unknown are excluded from the calculation. For some institutions the # of students by living arrangement will be known, but dollar amounts will not be known. In this case the # of students with no corresponding dollar amount will be excluded from the denominator.

umd is a fantastic but underrated school. not many people know about it outside of minnesota and wisconsin, and even fewer consider it during their college search, but it is a wonderful school nonetheless. it has miles of trails, a great city down the hill, awesome sports, good people, and best of all it is cheap.
Jill from Grayslake, IL
Most the instructors I've had were great. Many interesting courses are offered and I've enjoyed most of my classes.
Emily from WI
I have taken a lot of different courses from different departments and I have learned a ton. My teachers actually care about how I am doing in their classes which makes me want to attend their classes.
Courteny from Saint Paul, MN
The professors are great when it comes to helping students, even in big lectures. They respond quickly to email and are always available during office hours. There are many great resources here to help you succeed as well such as the tutoring center (my personal favorite), the first year experience office, and the career office (can help with resumes). All of these services accept walk-ins and are free of charge!
Kristin from Oakdale, MN
There is always something to do on campus or in Duluth. There are numerous campus organizations and everyone is involved in at least one organization. The campus is mid-sized but still has the small town feel which was important for me since I came from a very small town.
Tracy from Mantorville, MN
I am in the business school and have been for 3 years know. I am just going into my senior year and have found every class i have taken to very helpful. The most important thing for me is that i have been able to relate much of it to my outside experience, such as my internship. I found this to be very important to me because that is one of the key areas i looked for in a college
John from Maple Grove, MN
This school is amazing and the campus is beautiful!
Megan from Hermantown, MN
Beautiful view of the lake from different parts of campus. Great opputunities in the outdoors.
Sarah from Duluth, MN
Attending the University of Minnesota- Duluth was the best decision I have ever made. It is in a fantastic location, I have a beautiful view of Lake Superior right from my dorm; the staff and people are all friendly, helpful, and want you to achieve, and the campus is beautiful, there is always something to do so there is never an excuse for getting bored. All in all- it is a great school!
J.H.- freshman at UMD
I would say UMD is a very accepting campus. They work extremely hard every year to make sure that everyone has equal resources and facilities. I don't think I've ever feel more accepted than I have a UMD.
