Overview
Founded in 1869, Southern Illinois University in Carbondale is a public flagship university and the oldest university in the SIU system. SIU is home to ten colleges and schools conferring undergraduate degrees as well as an Honors Program. For students who wish to learn in another culture, SIU offers numerous study abroad programs ranging in length from two weeks to a full school year. To provide a break from academia, SIU is surrounded by two state parks, four lakes, and the Shawnee National Forest.
