Overview

Founded by a Union army soldier in 1865, Shaw University is an Historically Black College and University in the North Carolina Research Triangle and the first HBCU in the south. Shaw confers bachelor’s degrees in over 20 academic majors and is the first university in the United States to offer a 4-year medical program. Additionally, Shaw is the first HBCU in the nation to admit women. Throughout the year, Shaw holds a number of all-campus ceremonies from the Founder’s Day Convocation to the Coronation of Miss Shaw.
