Maternal/Child Health and Neonatal Nurse/Nursing

A maternal health neonatal nurse helps take care of a mother and her baby before, during, and after the labor and delivery process. Some of the daily duties of a maternal health neonatal nurse may include monitoring the mother's vital signs during labor, checking the mother's cervix for dilation, feeding a baby, helping the labor and delivery team during the delivery process, and checking the baby after the birth. To get a material child health and neonatal nursing degree, you must first earn a bachelor's degree in nursing. This, combined with a few years of on-the-job experience, will give you the preparation you need to continue your education and specialize in maternal child health and neonatal nursing. This program typically lasts two years and students will study embryology, developmental physiology, and childbirth. You'll attend deliveries and, after you've had some practice, even have the opportunity to assist women giving birth. Once you complete your studies, you'll be eligible to sit for the national Neonatal Nurse Practitioners exam. Upon completion, most students work in hospitals or private practices.
