Do you have any tips for prospective students?

Students planning to attend Maryland Eastern Shore should know that you will not get pacified, instead pushed to exceed limits that one may have thought was impossible. Another important thing to learn if planning to attend Eastern Shore or any college is how to be independent. Having an advisor or someone to look over you is good to keep you on track as well.

Do you find there’s enough academic rigor at your school?

Academic rigor is vital. Deadlines are taken seriously and majority of the work in college nowadays have to be completed on the computer. So after the due date the assignment will not open back up unless the professor does so. However most of the work that students receive, they will have a whole week to complete. Time management plays a major role in how a student completes their work.

Describe the dorm life at your college.

Dorm life is very welcoming. The room assistants greet us whenever we walk through the door. They change the decorations every two weeks or when a big holiday is coming up. They also have programs that discuss relevant topics such as time management, alcohol abuse, and weight management. Since students are away from home the room assistants do a great job of making us feel like a little family.

Describe the food and dining at your college.

The cafe is huge and filled with great food. There are three meals a day during the week and two on the weekends. The food is consistently cooked well, and the cafe remains clean. Sometimes the food can seem redundant and students start to miss a home cooked meal. Overall the food is good and the area is spotless.

What’s there to do for fun at your college?

At UMES there is always something going on whether it be a sporting event, play, school-sponsored party, rally, movie night, and much more. Sometimes you may even need to put all of the events in your calendar to keep up!

Do you feel you’re getting value for the money you’re spending on college?

Though we do like to have fun, our school is very big on giving back to the community. When you go on our website there is always something posted about a charity event we would be having and they always give you instructions on how to volunteer.

Which types of students will excel at your college?

UMES is really great for those pursuing some sort of science degree. Although we do have other good departments to offer, the science department is rapidly growing and they have excellent programs that students have the opportunity of entering after completing their undergraduate.
