Texas Southern University is a fine institution, despite all the negative trash people say about it. Taking courses in chemistry, biology, and math at this college really made me see the important role that the classes played not only in science, but even in life. While, in high school I took interest in these courses, but never took notice to the roles they play in everyone's life. Everything is made of matter right? Matter boils down to chemistry. Everyone shares a similar genetic makeup and that boils down to biology. Each measured quantity, distance, and time boils down to math, right?

Of course not, ahem excuse my sarcasm. I have really branched out when I began Texas Southern University I have met several members in the honors college. Also member in the organizations I am in. My main victory is taking on an executive position of the pre-health professions club. The only thing I would have negative to say is, at times my university feels like a party school; because when I am at home I was surrounded by people that were serious and did not overly indulged in this party craziness. I would not say that I do not have fun from time to time, but I will say that I am able to effectively divide the time for work and time for play.

Bang for the buck

Yes, yes, and yes Texas Southern University gives opportunities for many scholarships and room for financial aid, but this is also great but I really need money to save for pharmacy school; therefore, what they offer is fine and dandy but not enough to see my way through pharmacy school. They need to grant pre-pharmacy students with more scholarship opportunities because the scholarships for pre-pharmacy students are scarce, if they can improve this I would be extremely grateful.

Tips for prospective students
Being in college for over one semester has opened my eyes to a lot of things. When I was in high school, I dispelled many of the college myths, and I never envisioned college to be different from high school. I will advise prospective students to do the same, if I had a chance to go back in time and talk to myself as a high school senior I would advise myself to be careful of the people I surround myself with, become more involved in extracurricular activities, and to budget my money wisely. Firstly I will advise myself to be careful of the people I associate with to avoid negative influences. Moreover, I will also advise myself to be very involved in extracurricular activities as this will help increase my network and hone my leadership abilities. Finally, I will advise myself to budget and spend resourcefully because college expenses are constantly on the rise and it is only wise to spend intelligently and save for the rainy days to come. College has been a learning experience for me and I hope to continue to provide for my institution. It is not what the institution can do for you; it is about what you can do for your institution.

Texas Southern University does not make you; you make Texas Southern University to what you want it to be. My university is growing into a diverse community although it is a historically black college, but if you want to go to an institution that provides opportunities such as internships, scholarships, and study abroad TSU would be a great school for you. The College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences is by far the best college you could attend, I am not saying this because I am a pharmacy major. Maybe I am, but to get down to the main point Texas Southern University is where you want to be and that’s the honest truth.

I am definitely learning from the many professors I have in the chemistry department, and my mentor. I have already participated in a mini research project that opened my eyes to what research is. I've meant great professors who are guiding me into the world of science. Soon I feel like I will be able to take what I've learned and implement that into research to improve some area of human life.

I am enjoying attending Texas Southern it has been a up and down roller coaster this semester, but it has only made me grow. There are plenty of parties to attend and the city of Houston is a great place in itself, and that made it even more enjoyable. I do appreciate the people I have meant and new friends that I've made that make the experience. The memories I've complied, and the late nights cramming; I look back and laugh. Texas Southern can be tons of fun, but I kept school the priority and parties last.

Bang for the buck
Texas Southern has its faults just like any school but I think it does have its bang for the buck. I think they do need more departmental scholarships for students who aren't incoming freshman. They do need to renovate their dorms, but besides that it is a good school. Texas Southern has that family feel to it so if looking or that then its the college for you.
Tips for prospective students
Students who are considering Texas Southern should visit first and make sure this is the school for them. If your looking for a small teacher to student ratio then this is a great place. The school does have a lot of parties and activities constantly going on so I would say you should be ready to manage your time wisely. Lastly, be ready to work hard, be aware of the people you associate with, and most importantly don't be afraid college is a great place!

Texas Southern is a great college for students who would like a smaller class size and more intimate relationship with professors. The campus is a relative size so its not too big or too small. The city of Houston has a lot to offer in it self, and of course the fun entertainment the school has to offer is immense. Texas Southern also holds great majors for those looking for particular majors that they maybe can't find at other schools.

I went to this school for about two years before i transferred. This school has really thought me about being responsible. Although all schools have their flaws. TSU is really a school with a difference. Starting from the faculty, the staff, and the student body; together they make your freshmen experience that of a wonder. I really enjoyed my stay at Texas Southern University

The University is priced perfectly for in state students!
The University is not to big but not to small. The University staff will go out of there way to help you if you have a problem and are respectful. |
Tips for prospective students

To get funding for this school you should stay on top of all required paper work for aid etc.
If you really need something you must be humble no matter what because any signs of attitude or disrespect due to anger will put you at the back of the line. |

Texas Southern University is an emerging university that provides an intimate and unique learning environment. The campus is home to several state-of-the-art facilities, accomplished faculty, and ambitious students. In my opinion, it's definitely one of the premiere HBCUs in the nation.
Tips for prospective students
Write down yearly goals of what you'll like to accomplish during your tenure at TSU (post it on your wall to keep you focus). Utilize the writing lab on campus to quickly upgrade your writing skills from a high school level to a collegiate level. Be friendly, keep a smile, and don't try to impress people .... you're not going to be friends with everyone but it's good practice to be social b/c you actually might develop long-term friendships, find your soul mate, or make valuable connections.
Academic Rigor
I spent many hours studying and doing homework. I felt challenged which says a lot b/c I thought I wouldn't be considering I came from such a rigorous high school.
Dorm Life
I stayed in an apartment on campus and I was very comfortable. My only issue was parking ... sometimes getting back late I would have to park across the street. I recommend you stay in either Tierwester, UC, Savoy, or the brand new dorm hall.
Food and Dining
I never went in the cafeteria since I had a kitchen but I don't recall hearing bad things.
What to do for fun
Luckily TSU isn't in the middle of the country or a boring medium sized city like most universities. Houston is a huge playground ... there's so many cool things to do. You have the Galleria, Aquarium, Museum District, professional sports, Discovery Green, Downtown, Rice Village, Bayou Place, The Woodlands etc. And there's Galveston Beach within a hour, it has many interesting activities to cure your boredom and curiosity.
Bang for the buck
Despite the increase in tuition recently, TSU is still very affordable compared to most schools. Plus there are plenty of scholarships available to help deserving students in need
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The Tiger Walk/Student Center is the heart of campus life.
Greek Life
Total waste of time and a distraction on campus. The greek system is designed for insecure people of weak character and an identity crisis. I encourage everyone to seek membership in organizations outside greek for community service, improving your resume, and meeting other students .... there's dozens. I have zero respect for the greek system b/c of mountains of evidence proving they're divisive, problematic, regressive, and immature. The truly progressive, cool & unique people are not greek.
Campus Safety
You have to use common sense especially if you never lived in a big inner city. Try to stay away from Cuney Homes right outside campus, try to walk in packs at night, lock your car door at all times, do not walk to the corner store at night, and if you ever see too many shady characters go the other way or go home.

TxSU is a great university! It is one of the few HBCUs that hold true to its tradition and legacy while providing a non-conventional, competitive education! Although I am a pharmacy/biology major, I'd have to say that TxSU is very aggressive across the board in all areas! From Sciences to Communications and back, TxSU can compete with any other university!
