Review of Southern Oregon University

Describe your college in three sentences.

Warm, personable environment. Great teachers. Great school for non-traditional students.

Do you have any tips for prospective students?

Enrollment services and advising often make mistakes. Be on top of your own track to graduate, and if you don't hear back on something (like financial aid) go back and ask about it. They often miss things.

Do you find there’s enough academic rigor at your school?

I feel challenged in my classes, but it is a bit of a mixed bag. It of course depends on what teacher you have. You get out what you put in.

Describe the dorm life at your college.

I did not live in the dorms so cannot comment. It seems like people have fun there though. They are making me write another sentence.

Describe the food and dining at your college.

The food is quite decent! And cheap. The student union has many options. I often eat there for lunch for under $5.

What’s there to do for fun at your college?

Ashland is situated in the Rogue Valley, which is surrounded by the beautiful Siskiyou mountains. Right from campus you can go hiking, mountain-biking, snowboarding and more. There are a lot of clubs on campus that are very active so it is easy to find people that want to do the same things as you.

Which types of students will excel at your college?

Southern Oregon University is rated one of the best schools for queer identified students. LGBTQ students enjoy a vibrant community center with many events throughout the year.

How would you describe campus safety? Do you feel safe on campus?

Ashland is a small town with little crime. The campus feels very safe. In addition, campus security is really friendly and willing to come walk you to your car or dorm if you feel nervous. They come very quickly when called.
