Review of North Carolina A & T State University

from Greensboro, NC

Did learn a lot

I just graduated from A&T in May, and I feel more than ready to begin my Master's of Accounting program at The Ohio State University. Not only am I prepared, but I also managed to get a scholarship for my Master's and for the CPA Exam (which I am already studying for). The classes are challenging, but it is fun to take some of the electives (not all majors have room for electives, so be careful about that).

Did enjoy being here

I absolutely love A&T. I grew up around it, and I am so glad that I chose to attend. Now that I graduated, I miss it very much. The years flew by, so make sure to experience all that you can. A&T is more than just the campus, all of Greensboro supports the school. You get student discounts at the Bojangles and Biscuitville down the street, and you are not an Aggie until you go to Cook-Out (for those of you who do not have one).

Do you feel you’re getting value for the money you’re spending on college?

It is very affordable, especially for in-state students. Keep your grades up so that you will be qualified for the Dowdy scholarships when you enroll (they were created after I enrolled, so I was not eligible). Talk to your chair about creating incentive programs for freshmen (not impossible - Accounting has one).

Do you have any tips for prospective students?

Check to see if your department has scholarships. It is very difficult to obtain scholarship money once you have started, so try to get every scholarship possible before classes start. Also, consider work study. It is a great way to earn a little extra money without having to drive to a job every day and will help you get to know your professors. Consider playing an intramural sport - I was on the tennis team so I was unable to play PowderPuff football, and I regret it everyday!

Which types of students will excel at your college?

Prospective accountants, engineers, english majors, agricultural majors, business majors in general (I'm biased, the School of Business and Economics was my home away from home for four years). Athletes who are very focused are also welcome because Aggie Athletics is serious (make sure you are also able to keep up your grades because you will have early morning workouts no matter which sport you choose).
