Review of Norfolk State University

from Norfolk , VA

Do you feel you’re learning a lot?

Norfolk State University not only provides a very high standard of learning in the academic realm, but also promotes growth in the individual. As a pre-nursing major, I have attained a lot of information that will help me to excel in my field of choice. However, NSU has also helped me to develop characteristics that will aid me in becoming a contributing member of society, such as responsibility and independence.

Do you enjoy the experience at your school?

As a Student Ambassador and a member of the NSU Concert Choir, I assure you that there is something here for everyone to enjoy. Whether you love to sing, act, play an instrument or a sport, or just interact with other people, there is always something for you to get involved in and to be a part of something great. If you aren't that great on stage, but you shine brightly in the classroom, there's also an Honors Program that caters to students who excel academically as well. For those students who study hard during the week but let their hair down on the weekends, you can also find fun events to participate in once you've worked hard all week long. The social life at Norfolk State University is what you make it.

Do you feel you’re getting value for the money you’re spending on college?

Norfolk State University is worth every penny. It is impossible to put a dollar amount on the experience that you will gain from attending NSU. Aside from its great balance of the academic and social environments, the spirit and school pride here is amazing. At NSU, I have gained networking opportunities and developed friendships/relationships that I will cherish for a lifetime. Once you're a Spartan, you're a Spartan for life. The family-oriented atmosphere here is what caused me to fall in love with Norfolk State University. It made being away from home for the first time a great experience and a smooth transition.

Do you have any tips for prospective students?

My biggest suggestion for new freshmen entering college would be not to underestimate college life. When most people tell you about college, they only tell you the good stuff. They tell you about the parties, the staying-up-late, the long weekends, but they fail to tell you about the hours of commitment to studying it takes to pass classes. In return, a lot of students enter college life unprepared for the work load. Also, come prepared to be your own person and live your own life. Your parents can no longer wake you up in the morning or call your teachers to discuss your grades. When you step onto a college campus, the responsibility is placed in your hands and it is up to you to make the most of your higher learning experience.

Which types of students will excel at your college?

Norfolk State University is great for students who want to get a headstart in the world. This institution breeds leaders and develops positive, hard-working, contributing members of society. NSU is known for its excellent Nursing Program and its nationally renowned Music Program. This university is for students who want to learn in a well-rounded, student-friendly, family-oriented environment. It is great for students who stand out amongst their peers and would like to continue making their mark on the world.
