Review of East Carolina University

from Holly Springs, NC

Describe your college in three sentences.

East Carolina is one of the best universities in North Carolina! It's a hidden gem! It has so much to offer! You will never be bored here and you will find the classes challenging and rewarding!

Do you have any tips for prospective students?

It is important to get involved as much as possible! Join clubs- the Greek Life at ECU has a lot to offer. Also, join the Student Pirate Club, which is the largest student booster organization in the nation. There is no better place to sit and watch a football game than in the Boneyard! Make sure that you go to class and meet your professors.

Do you find there’s enough academic rigor at your school?

The classes are challenging and you get out what you put into your studies! The most important thing to remember is that you must go to class. You cannot learn from your dorm room. If you are struggling with any courses use the free on campus tutoring service. There is also a Pirate to Pirate mentoring program for freshman. There are many services on the campus that are there to help you be successful.

Describe the dorm life at your college.

The dorm life is not the best but not the worst either. It depends on where you want to live. West End is probably the most convenient to everything. Central Campus is closest to classes. College Hill is closest to the stadium, so if you are planning on being in the band or color guard, that would be the best place for you. They are building a new dorm on the hill that will open fall of 2015.

Describe the food and dining at your college.

The food is not bad. ECU has two dining halls: one on the hill and the other in West End. Fried Chicken Wednesdays are the best! There are also many other eating places throughout campus where you can use your meal plan. One nice thing about ECU's meal plan is that you can use it as often as you like because it is unlimited. You don't just get 3 meals a day. You can visit the dining hall all day if you want. ECU has 2 different plans- Purple and Gold plan.

What’s there to do for fun at your college?

Anything you want to do, East Carolina University has it! ECU is proud of its traditions and its spirit is just amazing! Also, the atmosphere around campus is vibrant, especially on home football game weekends. ECU has numerous clubs so anything you want to d you can find.

Do you feel you’re getting value for the money you’re spending on college?

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Sup Dogs is a great restaurant where many students hang out, especially on a warm day when you can hang out on the deck. It is a favorite among students!

Which types of students will excel at your college?

It is a great place for any student! When you walk around campus you will find all different types of people. It is definitely not a cookie cutter type of campus! Greek Life is a great way to be actively involved on campus. Students involved in Greek Life have higher GPA's and retention rates than non-Greeks. It provides you opportunities in leadership, volunteering, being part of a group and philanthropy activities. I highly recommend giving Greek Life a try!

The campus is pretty safe. You need to be aware of your surroundings and always walk in groups. ECU has safety measures put in place to keep students safe, but you have to use common sense as well, especially walking a t night!
