"Colorism" is a demonstrated bias towards people with lighter skin tones over people with darker skin tones, and often refers to explicit discrimination based on the complexion of a person's skin. Research on colorism associates this bias to social disparities for Black, Brown, Asian, mixed and Indigenous people with darker skin tones, including: worse mental health, higher school suspension rates, and fewer job opportunities compared to their lighter-skinned counterparts.
