Free Help with Filing the FAFSA
Free FAFSA help is real. Real humans on chat, phone, and at libraries will sit with you until the form is done. If securing help in person, bring your 2024 tax return, your StudentAid.gov login, a parent’s email address, and a charger. You leave with a submitted FAFSA and a screenshot for your files. That’s the win.

What to bring for a one-sitting finish
- StudentAid.gov account for you and each contributor, parent or spouse
- 2024 tax info and consent to transfer data
- Your college list, where you can add up to 20 schools and then swap some out later
- A laptop charger, a quiet spot, and ten minutes to text your parent the contributor invite
How to resolve common FAFSA roadblocks
Add a parent or spouse with the email invite
Inside the FAFSA, you can enter their email. They will receive a unique code to log in, complete their section, and sign. This is much easier than previous years. You don't need to share birth dates or worry about typos.
No Social Security number in the family?
Parents or guardians without SSNs can create StudentAid.gov accounts through the official pathway and sign online. It takes longer, but it still works.
Locked out of your FSA ID?
Use the Help Center recovery flow or call 1-800-433-3243, TTY 1-800-730-8913. Have your email handy for verification.
Need a paper FAFSA?
This is possible, too. Download the 2026–2027 FAFSA PDF in English or Spanish and mail it. It's slower, but it's still free.
Smart prep helps you finish the FAFSA faster
- Create accounts for you and your contributors, then send the contributor invite from inside the form
- Gather 2024 tax info, current bank balances, and child support info if paid or received
- List up to 20 schools you are considering. Then reorder or swap later
- Review, sign, submit, and screenshot the confirmation page for your files
Scam guard keeps your info and money safe
You never pay for FAFSA help. Ignore services selling special access, faster aid, or “guaranteed” scholarships. Never share your FSA ID with anyone, including helpers. If a site asks for a fee to file, bounce.
FAQs answer the questions students actually ask
Who can I talk to today for free
An FSA specialist via live chat or 1-800-433-3243, TTY 1-800-730-8913. For in-person help, search your state’s Form Your Future page.
Can I finish if my parent doesn’t have an SSN
Yes. There is an official account path for contributors without an SSN. They complete their section online and sign electronically.
Where do I find state deadlines and extra grants
Your state’s higher education site, linked from NASFAA’s state map. Some states also run FAFSA hotlines and host weekend workshops.
Do outside scholarships reduce my grants
Sometimes schools repackage to stay under cost of attendance and financial need. Ask aid offices to reduce loans or work-study first, and keep grants intact whenever policy allows.
