Review of Western Michigan University

from Saint Joseph, MI

Do you feel you’re learning a lot?

No matter how great the school is, you are going to get out what you put in. That being said, I feel like Western is preparing me so well for my future career. Every single one of my classes--though challenging me a lot at times--is beneficial to me. My professors are interesting, and are truly passionate about the subject. They also have high expectations of their students, which really pushes you to give it your all.

Do you enjoy the experience at your school?

I am involved in a lot of things here at WMU. I am in a group called Intervarsity, I am on an intermural football team, I am a part of a social justice group on sex trafficking, I am part of an events team, and I am part of the Lee Honors College. I love the many different things I can get involved in. Western has so many student organizations, there is literally something for everyone here. And if there isn't a group you feel you belong to, you can make your own! It's really great. College is not only about the academic aspects, but it is also important that you are happy and making relationships here. I have met so many incredible people, and I have been able to express myself by becoming a part of the many different things offered to me.

Do you feel you’re getting value for the money you’re spending on college?

Before deciding on Western, I was contemplating on going to private school. Although I got a pretty generous scholarship from a certain private school in particular, in the end I decided on Western. Compared to the many other public schools in Michigan, Western is definitely one of the best as far as price goes. Obviously economic times are hard, but Western has been really helpful with scholarships.

Do you have any tips for prospective students?

You have to go to a school that is going to make you happy. Forget what you friends think, what your parents think, or what money says. Forget it all, and focus on yourself. Where will you be happy? If money is an issue, realize that there are always scholarships and loans. Even if your parents or friends don't agree with your decisions, you can't let that affect you either. Definitely take what they say into consideration, but realize that if you are not happy where you're at, they won't be either.

Which types of students will excel at your college?

Anyone who wants to learn and grow as a person. You will love it here, I promise!
