Being that Watkins is an art school, you are free to express yourself through your art in whatever way you deem necessary. The teachers are willing to let students express themselves and help with anything they can. You also get opportunities to work in the industry and meet people that are in the industry as well.
Do you have any tips for prospective students?
Make sure that you understand the concepts in each class because that is what your grade will depend on. If you do not take time on your projects assigned, the teachers will be able to tell. Take advantage of the opportunities offered through the student newsletter you receive through your student email!
Do you find there’s enough academic rigor at your school?
The academics are great. The teachers are willing to help and so are the students. This will come in handy when one needs help understanding the concepts of each class.
Describe the dorm life at your college.
The dorms are big because they are dorm apartments. In each room there are 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and 4 sinks outside of the bathroom area. There is also a living room, a wash room and a kitchen. They are not co-ed dorms, but they are co-ed apartment buildings (basically, girls share an apartment and boys share an apartment.)
Describe the food and dining at your college.
Being that there is no meal plan, you have to provide your own food. However, there is a cafe inside the school that closes at 9 pm on weekdays and is closed on the weekends. There are also snack machines. And being that there is a grocery store not far from the campus, and you are only 5-10 minutes away from downtown Nashville ,you will always have a place to go and eat!
What’s there to do for fun at your college?
There are many activities to do on campus. You usually just let the people in Student Life know personally or in a survey emailed out during the end of the year and they will try to make it happen. You can also use one of the two theaters if you want to have a movie night! Everyone knows that downtown Nashville has many things as well such as concerts, clubs, shopping, eating and more!
Do you feel you’re getting value for the money you’re spending on college?
It definitely is not as expensive as other art schools and being that there are many events that occur on campus and the campus is small, which allows you to form close relationships with those you meet, you most certainly get what you pay for.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus
The campus is on a lake in Nashville and geese even love the campus
Which types of students will excel at your college?
Students who love art (Fine Art, Graphic Design, Photography, Film and Interior Design)!
Are you involved in any clubs or activities?
There are definitely clubs for those who really want to become involved. There is Co-H, Student Government and more! Artists that are in the industry visit the campus as well, as we have Thursday artist night. If you are interested in anything, let Student Life know and they will try their best to make it happen!
Are you involved in any clubs or activities?
None because there is no discrimination
How would you describe campus safety? Do you feel safe on campus?
We have a 24/7 security staff that is very friendly
