Review of St. Mary's University

from Houston, TX

Do you feel you’re learning a lot?

From dedicated and caring professors to helpful classmates and friendly fathers and brothers from the church ministry, this university has helped me to grow a lot as a person, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. Since it is a liberal arts, private and catholic institution, it has a lot of new information to provide for me. One of the strongest majors that it offers is Biology, which is also very challenging. Though, since the student-teacher ratio is about 17 to 1 the professors pay a lot of attention to their students when they need help.

Do you enjoy the experience at your school?

Since it is such a small school, I have gotten the chance to know a lot of good people since last year. A lot of the students here are very friendly and since the majority of the students are Hispanic, I feel that I can relate to a lot of them. The Greek Life is awesome because not only do its members commit to doing a lot of community service, but they also try to get to know other students and get them involved as well.

Do you feel you’re getting value for the money you’re spending on college?

This school costs about $36,000 a year, and while this may seem like a lot of money, I feel that every dollar is worth paying for the wonderful education we get here. Not only that, but St. Mary's offers a lot of financial aid and scholarships to a lot of its students. So most people don't even have to pay for half of their tuition.

Do you have any tips for prospective students?

My advice to anyone who decides to come here is to meet a lot of people, get connected, stay involved, ask questions if you have them and to stay organized. If you need help with any class, do not be afraid to meet with your professors during their office hours because that's what they are here for. If possible, get into study groups with other students so that you can help others and they can help you as well.

Which types of students will excel at your college?

People who like to be involved will love this school. We have a lot of opportunities to volunteer for community service around the city of San Antonio. Also, if you like to stand out, this is the school for you. We only have a total of about 3,000 students or less so you get the opportunity to be yourself, and at the same time, do something great that will benefit the school.
