Review of Rutgers University-Newark

from Germantown, MD

Describe your college in three sentences.

Rutgers-Newark was my first choice for a reason. It's a quaint, well-kept school with a diverse student body, respectable faculty, and is considerably down-to-earth compared to the main campus. It's a good school.

Do you have any tips for prospective students?

Don't come if you're uppity. We're centered in a lower income urban area, and we receive less attention and funding than the main campus.

Do you find there’s enough academic rigor at your school?

Classes and departments range from basic to extremely challenging. There's always a course to keep you interested or further your learning (as corny as that may sound).

Describe the dorm life at your college.

Dead on weekends, and two of the buildings are noticeably aging, but housing is pretty good here. Really convenient, considering this is predominantly a commuter school.

Describe the food and dining at your college.

You get fed. The food offered for those with the meal plans in the residence halls is par.

What’s there to do for fun at your college?

Lots of activities, especially during the beginning and end of the semesters/during exams. Always something to do on campus, except for on the weekends. NYC's 20 minutes away, and Halsey Street and Downtown Newark have a lot of interesting things to offer.

Do you feel you’re getting value for the money you’re spending on college?

Very cost effective for in-state students, and reasonable for out-of-state students. You really get a good education without spending crazy amounts of money.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Rob's Pizzeria and Danny's are two food joints that are basically a part of campus.

Which types of students will excel at your college?

People who are not bougie or bigoted. People looking to school for two, four, or six years.

Are you involved in any clubs or activities?

Anything you could ask for, really. Sports include soccer, tennis, basketball, volleyball, intramurals, etc.

Are you involved in any clubs or activities?

Rutgers-Newark isn't one of those Greek schools, but there's a live Greek culture. Lots of good parties from what I hear.

How would you describe campus safety? Do you feel safe on campus?

Security and the police do a pretty good job. Sometimes campus safety alerts can come a little too late. Campus itself is really, really safe considering the surrounding area is not always like that. Petty thefts by other students. Be smart about where you keep your stuff/locking your door or car.
