Review of Prairie View A & M University

from Glendale, AZ

Describe your college in three sentences.

Prairie View A&M is a community based college. It's main purpose is to bring the students and faculty together to achieve the common goal of a quality education. Prairie View offers multiple services just to make sure that it's students are comfortable and successful.

Do you have any tips for prospective students?

Prairie View A&M is a good hour away from Houston, all of the livelihood of the university is on campus. It's a drive from the Houston outlets, movie theaters, and such so if you're coming be sure to bring a car or have a very close friend, or family member who can drive you around to places.

Do you find there’s enough academic rigor at your school?

The university's main focus is to make sure Freshman make it through their first year of college. They have multiple camps before school starts so they can get adjusted to college life and get a few classes off of their checklist. There's a tutoring center specifically for freshman in our dormitory grounds, but also one for every class in the library. Additionally there is a writing center for students that need help with their essays. But if you want specific help for certain subjects, there's tutorials to help students get a better grasp of the subject.

Describe the dorm life at your college.

Freshman live in the University College, far away from upperclassmen so we're not persuaded by their lifestyle. Our dorm rooms are nicely sized, we even have privacy in our rooms. Once PVAMU students become upperclassmen they can move into the school's off-campus apartments or the dorms' phases, where you can have 1, 2, or 3 roommates. But in an upperclassmen dorm you have a kitchen, your own room, and if you only have 1 roommate you have your own bathroom.

Describe the food and dining at your college.

The MSC is where all underclassmen living on campus eat. It's cafeteria styled and offers an endless supply of food. The only problem with the MSC food is the options eventually begin to repeat themselves and the food begins to lose it's flavor. If you become sick of the MSC food you can go to the Chick-fil-a next door, or the Panther Grill which offers higher quality food for a price. As far as restaurants go, students order from a student ran company, Brookcake, Pizza Hut, Domino's, or a Chinese restaurant.

What’s there to do for fun at your college?

There are so many activities for Prairie View A&M students it's hard to schedule all that you'd like to do. And the activities extend out to everyone, whether it be Greek step shows, sports activities, movies on campus, celebrity guest speakers, poetry nights, dances, and during Homecoming week the list extends to roller skating, laser tag, concerts, parties etc.

Do you feel you’re getting value for the money you’re spending on college?

At Prairie View A&M, students will enjoy themselves and receive a quality education at the same time. Friends and faculty become family, so even if you are far away from home the homesickness will be kept to a minimum.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The campus is currently building a new gym which will include a pool as well as rock climbing, as well as a shopping center, and a bowling alley.

Which types of students will excel at your college?

If you are interested in a quality education, close relationships with professors, multiple services available to you, and a campus with something always available to do, this is the school for you.

Are you involved in any clubs or activities?

For every major, there is a club related to future career paths. There are scholarship based sports teams, and club sports for athletes who are unable to or do not desire to join the school's teams. There's also honors and special interests clubs, as well as beauty pageants to be Mr. and Mrs. PV.

Are you involved in any clubs or activities?

There are multiple sororities or fraternities. If you are interested in Greek life, you will find at least one Greek who has the same vision as you. However you are not able to join until your second year attending Prairie View.

How would you describe campus safety? Do you feel safe on campus?

The campus shuts down at 11pm at night. No one is allowed to loiter and in order to enforce these rules, security as well as PV police are constantly strolling around the campus. There are night escorts available, and in the case of an extreme emergency there are blue pole lights located all over campus, just run to those and press the button then a siren will go off across the campus signaling help is on the way.
