If you're fresh out of high school or are trying to get back into school then NICC is a great place to look at. It's not too big or too small of a school with a wide array of classes you can take. I chose to attend here not only because it's affordable but because they offer courses on campus as well as online which fit my schedule very well.
Do you have any tips for prospective students?
If you're going to do online classes make sure you keep yourself on track. Without a teacher cues and deadlines it's easy to stay off track or even forget to finish a homework assignment on time. The online website that NICC provides is very easy to follow and you can see all your current classes on the front page with reminders for when assignments and tests are due as well.
Do you find there’s enough academic rigor at your school?
I wouldn't say that any of the classes I've taken have been painfully challenging or hard to complete. That's not to say that I passed them with ease. On the contrary, I have taken mostly online classes and have had to develop a sort of discipline and new study habits in order to keep up with my classes. Perhaps the classes didn't seem overly difficult for me because the teachers give enough time to complete assignments and are always there, either by email, appointment or phone call, in case I ever had a question or any problems with the subject matter.
Describe the dorm life at your college.
This school does not offer any dorms. I live in a town about 19 miles away and I either take classes online or drive the 19 miles back and forth everyday for class.
Describe the food and dining at your college.
The school cafeteria recently had a change in their menu, actually. It's almost like a small restaurant specially made for NICC. They have breakfast and lunch there everyday with some things that are ready to go in case you're in a hurry. I have eaten there quite a bit, actually, and I do like their food very much. Their menu ranges from pancakes, omelets, eggs, sausage, etc., for breakfast to burgers, pizza, wraps, salads, and lunch specials for lunch.
What’s there to do for fun at your college?
The student center always has something fun. Sometimes we have magicians coming in, musicians, etc. and it's always fun to go and see what they're going to have on that day during the week.
Do you feel you’re getting value for the money you’re spending on college?
This is one of the great things about NICC. You get a big education for a small price. Price per credit is only $150 which is a lot cheaper than most schools around the area.
Which types of students will excel at your college?
If you're a high school student about to graduate, NICC is a great place to go. You can attend NICC for your first 2 years and then transfer to your school of choice afterwards (which is what I am currently doing). This way, you're slowly introduced into the college scene and you save a lot of money on your first 2 years in college. If you're trying to save money and need to work then this college is also for you. They offer quite a bit of their classes online. This saves you the time of going to the actual classroom . You do still have to study quite a bit on your own, though, but that's nothing new.
Are you involved in any clubs or activities?
NICC has Phi Theta Kappa, which I am a member of, on their campus.
How would you describe campus safety? Do you feel safe on campus?
I've never heard of any safety problems having to do with the campus at NICC and my time there has been spent well.
