Howard has excellent academics and is the MECCA of all HBCUs. At Howard, students have a voice, a say in what goes on. Organizations at Howard build character and connections for a lifetime.
Do you have any tips for prospective students?
Don't buy unnecessary things! There's always free events going on where you can get free stuff. I have tee shirts and knickknacks to last me a lifetime! These events are also great ways to make friends.
Do you find there’s enough academic rigor at your school?
Classes can be difficult but you have some of the most caring teachers anywhere. They really care about whether you learn or not, more than your average professor. They expand the way you think and really let the knowledge change and grow you.
Describe the dorm life at your college.
Dorm life can be rowdy but one of the best experiences. You meet so many new people from all over. They have just as much interest in knowing you as you do them. There's always a good time to be had so people hardly ever want to go home! Roommates often become friends, but watch out for the crazies!
Describe the food and dining at your college.
The food in the cafe is good with a wide selection but just like any other place, if you're stuck eating the same foods over and over again you get bored and sick of it. But it sparks your creativity and courage to try new things and invent new ways to eat your favorite foods.
What’s there to do for fun at your college?
There's always events going on, from protest rallies and visits to the White House (plenty of historical sites) to dance parties and spa parties to BBQs and club sponsored activities. There's always something to do on and off campus. And everything's within reasonable distance!
Do you feel you’re getting value for the money you’re spending on college?
It is a pricey place but the long term benefits are amazing! From proposals in the middle of the yard on campus to the one on one attention provided for those tricky subjects, you get your money's worth.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus
The yard is the hub of social activity as is the Valley where there's often a party or water balloon fight. But no event is bigger than Homecoming. From the celebrities and amazing performances to the parades and vendors, it will always be the event, year after year, you'll never forget!
Which types of students will excel at your college?
If you like to have plenty of social opportunities, this is the school for you! Academic-wise, this is no school for slackers but if you're the type that loves to experience cool, fun and new things when you put the books down then you're destined to be a Howard Bison!
Are you involved in any clubs or activities?
There's a plethora of amazing clubs and student organizations to choose from! Diversity is everywhere on campus and everyone is so unified. Unity like family, integrity of a leader and purpose that makes a change are the three elements you'll find in every club, whether its culture clubs or academic clubs or anything at all!
Are you involved in any clubs or activities?
Our Greek sororities and fraternities, known as the Divine Nine, have a bond that can be seen even by those just visiting. You can see them volunteering and singing on the Yard in a way that touches all that sees them. The parties are note worthy as well!
How would you describe campus safety? Do you feel safe on campus?
Campus Security is taken very seriously on campus! You need a your ID card to get into just about everywhere! There are sessions for self defense and the campus police number is in every students' phone. There are emergency blue light posts all over campus in case of an incident and campus police don't hesitate to pick you up and take you back to campus if you don't feel safe enough to walk. Incident reports are sent to your email to make you aware of crime in the area. I've never felt so safe and secure!
