Sophomore Grover's Review

Review of Grove City College

Describe your college in three sentences.

GCC is a small and beautiful campus located in Grove City, PA, a similarly small, but charming, town. It has a close-knit student body family and the professors love getting to know their students personally. It has top-notch academics that will challenge you, but plenty of clubs, organizations, and intramural sports to blow off steam with.

Do you have any tips for prospective students?

Come to the campus and experience it for yourself! Come and meet your potential professors in a major you are considering at one of the Junior or Senior Crimson days. Have a meal in the cafeteria. Talk with students walking around on campus and you will see just how friendly they really are.

Do you find there’s enough academic rigor at your school?

The academics are quite challenging here, but they will help you learn.

Describe the dorm life at your college.

The majority of the students live in the on-campus dorms. This helps form that close family community we have. Guys and girls have separate dorms, but intervisitation is allowed on weekends and on Wednesday nights. Most of the dorms also have lobbies that are open to both genders until midnight everyday (longer on the weekends). This is very nice as during the week those who really need to study can have peace and quiet without the distraction of their hallmates and roommates having fun with their significant others, but for those who do want to get together with their boy/girlfriend there are places they can go to hang out. All the freshman resident students are placed in the same dorms (North Hall for the girls and Memorial or Hicks for they guys). This is great as it gives the freshmen a chance to really get to know their own class in a unique way. There are also some on-campus apartments available to upperclassmen. The rest of the dorms are made up of both halls with community bathrooms or suites. All the freshmen live on halls with community bathrooms.

Describe the food and dining at your college.

Bon Appetit is the company that is in charge of the food here at Grove City College. I have heard that they have been better in years past, but recently the food has not been great. There are two main dining rooms on campus attached to two of the dorms: Hicks and MAP. The food is set up as a buffet where you can go to different stations and pick out exactly what you want. There is also a small place to get food in the students union called the Geedunk. You can either choose from a set of options and purchase with a meal credit from your meal plan (just like you would when going into Hicks or MAP), or you can order something else and buy it with money. You can also get coffee, milk, juice, soda, junk food, or baked goods there. The Geedunk is open longer than the regular cafeterias so it is nice to have it as an option if you accidentally miss dinner or something. If you want to treat yourself to really good food, go to the biweekly Food Feedback Forums that are put on by Bon Appetit and the Students Government Association. Bon Appetit always goes out of their way to make something really good for those.

What’s there to do for fun at your college?

There are plenty of great clubs and intramural sports to get involved with for fun. You can also just hang out with friends in one of the two rec rooms and play pool or ping-pong. There is also a nice coffee shop in town that you can easily walk to called Beans on Broad that students like to hang out at. GCC is not a party school, so if that is what you are looking for don't come here. Grovers have a blast just being with friends and don't feel a need to go and get stoned doing so.

Do you feel you’re getting value for the money you’re spending on college?

GCC is an extremely inexpensive school which makes up for the fact that it doesn't accept federal aid (they will take state aid if you live in PA). They also have a pretty good financial aid program and if you get good grades, you can qualify for scholarships. Even if scholarships don't cover everything and you need to go into some debt (like me!), I would definitely say coming here is worth it! I love GCC and can't picture myself anywhere else.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

There is a tradition that happens when Grover guy asks his Grover girlfriend to marry him and she accepts. The guy's friends plan an ambush for him and carry him down to Wolf Creek (which runs through campus) and toss him in! His new fiance is supposed to meet him with a towel or she may be tossed in as well!

Which types of students will excel at your college?

GCC is great for students who are willing to work hard and really care about their studies and who are looking for a close college family.

Are you involved in any clubs or activities?

There are a ton of clubs to choose from! From fencing to ballroom dancing to rugby to the Secondary Education Society, you will find something that fits you.

Are you involved in any clubs or activities?

Greeks and independents get along quite well here. Most people I know have friends in both groups. Greeks make quite the scene during rush week and organize a number of the social events for the whole college.

How would you describe campus safety? Do you feel safe on campus?

This has got to be the safest campus and town in America. I don't know of anywhere else where people can safely claim tables in the cafeteria by leaving their wallets on it! I always feel very safe walking around by myself, even at 1 am. Campus safety is frequently making the rounds so you did need help for whatever reason, you would get it very fast.
