Duquesne University is a mid-size campus with all buildings within walking distance from the dorms. The learning community (with approximately 10,000 students) is extraordinary with teachers willing to help you in any way possible in order to earn that A. Paid tutors are available for students which shows that the university does care about your success. Teachers are willing to work with you over conflicts that may arise and offer lots of opportunities to hear and help with any questions you may have. Duquesne also brings in a lot of guest speakers, which can be listened to free of charge. One that was brought in last year was Eric Holden Jr., Attorney General of the United States! I have learned so much, and I know that if you go there, you will too! : )
Do you enjoy the experience at your school?
Duquesne has 80+ organizations on campus that hold events almost every week including free movies on Fridays. One of these organizations is the Office of Freshman Services, which assists freshman in their adjustment to college by offering guidance, newsletters, and a one of a kind orientation program. Duquesne is also located in the heart of Pittsburgh and within walking distance of the Consol Energy Center. For sports fans, this town is perfect since it is home to the Penguins, Steelers, and Pirates. I would definitely check out Duquesne and all it has to offer by going to www.duq.edu.
Do you feel you’re getting value for the money you’re spending on college?
Duquesne is expensive. However, by going here you will learn a lot from professors, other students, and life in general that is invaluable. You will be with students from all over the world and have opportunities to study abroad in Ireland and Italy if you wish. Plus, the financial aid office is willing to help out as much as possible to ensure that all costs will be covered. This university really wants to help you to succeed.
Do you have any tips for prospective students?
Adjusting to college life is difficult. Dorm life is a necessary evil, and hopefully you are blessed with a great roommate, if not try to make the best of the situation. You must be diligent with your studies especially during the first month because as soon as the first round of tests hit, the rest of the semester only gets harder. Please take advantage of the free tutors that are available if the material is difficult and hard to understand. Try to get involved in at least one organization on campus to maximize your potential while at Duquesne. Finally, find a routine for studying that works and stick with it. Remember that you are there to earn an education, you can party the rest of your life once you earn that high paying job!
Which types of students will excel at your college?
Duquesne is well known for their health services programs (Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Physician Assistant, Speech-Language Pathology, and Nursing) as well as for the Mylan School of Pharmacy. If you are considering these professions, then Duquesne University should be high on your list!
