Leaders Encouraging Airman Development (LEAD) Program for Enlisted Service Members
Offers enlisted service members the opportunity to attend the U.S. Air Force Academy Preparatory School and, subsequently, the Academy itself to earn a commission.

The Leaders Encouraging Airman Development (LEAD) Program gives active-duty Airmen and Guardians the chance to earn an appointment to the U.S. Air Force Academy (USAFA) or the Academy Prep School. LEAD is designed to recognize high-performing enlisted members and develop them into future officers through a fully funded undergraduate education and structured military leadership training.
LEAD is part of the Department of the Air Force’s broader talent development strategy, opening direct pathways for enlisted service members to commission through elite academic and military programs.
How the LEAD Program Works
Each year, enlisted Airmen and Guardians can apply to the U.S. Air Force Academy or the Preparatory School through the LEAD Program. The application is routed through the service member’s chain of command and includes endorsements, academic records, fitness scores, and a demonstrated commitment to leadership and service.
Qualified candidates may be admitted to:
- The U.S. Air Force Academy (USAFA): A four-year, tuition-free college and officer commissioning program
- The USAFA Preparatory School: A one-year academic and military preparation program for future Academy cadets
Those selected for USAFA commission upon graduation as second lieutenants in the Air Force or Space Force.
