Review of Wentworth Institute of Technology

from Haverhill, MA

Describe your college in three sentences.

Situated in Boston, MA, Wentworth provides an inclusive environment for prospective students in STEM fields. With guaranteed co-op experience, a wide variety of clubs and student-run organizations, and a well-structured academic system, Wentworth provides a strong foundation in whatever field you plan to fulfill. With the aesthetics of a small college, but the infrastructure and impact of a large university, Wentworth Institute proves itself to be a forerunner in the collegiate battle for knowledge.

Do you have any tips for prospective students?

Be involved. Wentworth provides a close-knit, inclusive environment for students of all majors to get involved with an on campus activity. Whether it be competing on a Division III athletic team, an intramural athletic team, or just a club, Wentworth has something for everyone. Plus, the extra social interaction will build up your academic resources (classmates).

Do you find there’s enough academic rigor at your school?

As a technological school, Wentworth's academics are quite rigorous. It is common to have large amounts of homework and multiple projects, while still maintaining your normal weekly schedule. However, Wentworth¢??s faculty to student ratio is rather small, allowing students to have a better ability to get in touch with their professors outside of classes to discuss course material, time management, or ask for an extension. Wentworth also boasts interdisciplinary work between majors on several projects (for example, in Introduction to Engineering, a biomedical engineer, computer engineer, and civil engineer could be working on a project together). This fosters an understanding of interdisciplinary work (crucial to career success), as well as student-driven teamwork.

Describe the dorm life at your college.

Wentworth has a great team at the Office of Housing and Residential Life. Between Resident Assistants to help you get through the year, activities on campus every weekend by the Weekends @ WIT team, to even your fellow suite and roommates, Wentworth dorm life is an inclusive environment for all of its students. The RA's are always available for emotional and physical guidance, and the team at public safety keeps the campus secure from the inside-out. Wentworth also boasts 7 dormitories across its relatively small campus, proving that there is always enough room for everyone. The dormitories have varying restrictions on being wet/dry, with strict policies against underage alcohol consumption, as well as educating students on the effects of alcohol. Commuters also have their perks at Wentworth. Situated in Boston, Wentworth has access to one of the best public transportation systems in the United States. The campus is less than 100 feet from the Green Line Museum of Fine Arts subway stop. Furthermore, the T offers discounted rates for students. Whether your situation be dorming, commuting, or an apartment in Boston, Wentworth has great opportunities for any type of living arrangement.

Describe the food and dining at your college.

Wentworth is served by Chartwells, which is an inexpensive yet high quality dining company. Chartwells serves a number of the other colleges surrounding Wentworth, including WIT's next door neighbor, MassArt. The school mandates one of three dining plans for all students living on campus, with prices curated to exactly what a student might need. Commuter students, however, do not need a dining plan but can still dine in the MassArt and Wentworth cafeterias, as Chartwells accepts Debit, Credit, and cash, just like any other eating establishment in the area. Off campus, Wentworth is surrounded by a plethora of different eateries. From the Mexcian food of Chipotle and Bolocco, to the craft pizza of Il-Mundo, to chain restaurants such as Dunkin Donuts and Starbucks, to even Peet's Coffee and Tea, the small coffee shop at MassArt, there is always affordable dining around WIT, as well as higher end restaurants for those who are looking for a night out in Boston.

What’s there to do for fun at your college?

Wentworth always seems to have something going on. If you're on campus, just look at the flyers posted all around campus, and the announcement coming over the radio in Beatty Cafeteria. WIT always has either free or extremely cheap activities to do on campus. Furthermore, Wentworth is adjacent to the Isabella Gardner Museum, as well as the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. Both offer discounted/ free passes for college students. Jumping on the T can bring a WIT student to Symphony Music Hall to catch a show, the Prudential to shop, to Berklee College of Music to hear a concert, and so much more. The only thing that beats Wetworth¢??s off campus activities is what a student can do on campus.

Do you feel you’re getting value for the money you’re spending on college?

Wentworth is a great school. Between the CO-OP experience, numerous clubs, inclusive environment, and the friendly students around campus, Wentworth proves itself to be one of the best colleges of Boston. There is no wonder why 99% Wentworth graduates are in their career field or in a graduate program within six months of graduation.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Wentworth's mascot is the Leopard. At the top-left corner of campus, there is a specially-made leopard, specifically made for the Wentworth campus. It is a Wentworth tradition to take a picture with the leopard at least once while a student. There is an unofficial contest for bragging rights given to those who can take the craziest picture with the Leopard.

Which types of students will excel at your college?

Wentworth is great for students that want to work hard, but still have a few laughs and good times on their way to a degree. For those who want to party, and care little about their academics, Wentworth is not the school for you. Wentworth is a school for those that want to make a difference in the world, and have a positive influence on those that they interact with.

Are you involved in any clubs or activities?

Wentworth has great campus life, and boasts a club or organization for nearly every activity a college student could desire. Any student, regardless of age, gender, or race can join any of the many clubs WIT has to offer, including: Associations related to career fields/ majors (e.g.: IEEE, ASCE, AIAS) Performance; Wentworth has two on campus acapella groups, as well as an internet radio station. As a participant college in the Colleges of the Fenway (explained below), Wentworth students can also join the COF Jazz Band, and take part in the COF Theater Project. Specific clubs and associations; Wentworth has a club for every student who passes through its doors. From the Society of Automotive Engineers, to running your own Internet Radio Show, to the Wentworth Ski Team, to even the COF Hip-Hop Dance Club, Wentworth definitely has an option for everyone. Intercollegiate clubs, activities, festivals; Wentworth is one of the seven colleges within the Colleges of the Fenway, a collaboration project by seven adjacent colleges in the Fenway area of Boston.

Are you involved in any clubs or activities?

Wentworth has minimal Greek Life. There is only one gender-inclusive Greek organization (Phi Sigma Pi) which is an academic honors organization. Aside from this, Wentworth has no Greek Life.

How would you describe campus safety? Do you feel safe on campus?

Wentworth has great campus safety. We have a Blue Light system, where a student can press a button on a payphone-like box, and be escorted by public safety to anywhere on campus. Furthermore, the Blue Light system also serves as an emergency alert system, immediately contacting WIT Public Safety as well as Boston Police simultaneously. The WIT Public Safety team are always friendly, and available to process a noise complaint, or campus suspicions, or fix an issue with your ID. Wentworth Public Safety also serves as desk attendants from 6:00 to 10:30 every night in every dormitory, ensuring the safety and well-being of all of the on-campus students.
