Review of Valdosta State University

from Valdosta, GA

Describe your college in three sentences.

Valdosta State University has a beautiful campus, teachers that can relate to their students most of the time, and is very committed to their sports. As far as attending to their students, VSU is pretty good about getting back the residents, hearing the opinion of the students and acting on it, and encouraging them to do their best. A few down sides to VSU is that the wifi is a bit spotty, there is almost always sometime of construction whether it is minor or major, and parking for residences could stand to be improved.

Do you have any tips for prospective students?

If you are going to live in the dorms, bring a microwave and your own fridge! That way you can keep the foods you want to share and don't care to share separated and 90% of the food you will eat is microwave friendly. In my opinion, after going here for 3 years now, do NOT get the meal plans with the dining options! Get the one that is $950. It will teach you how to budget, how to make use of the deals on campus, can be used in all dining areas and the two markets. Besides, Palms and Hopper dining have been known to not taste good at all and both cost $9 to get in (as of Fall '14) and even then majority of the stations are limited to what you can get. Also, make sure that you will enjoy the degree you declare! You will be here for at least 4 years, so be happy in what you do and make sure it is what you want.

Do you find there’s enough academic rigor at your school?

All degrees require work! That is best to learn early on. There will be some classes where you can slide through and be fine, but just remember you are paying for these classes and you should treat them as such. Mojority of my classes were not too terribly hard. I had to work and study hard, yes, but it is rewarding. Side note: There is one class that I believe everyone should take called Stimulating Creative Behavior. It is pretty much arts, crafts, and stress relief all in one, so take it maybe in your Junior- Senior year when thing are getting tough.

Describe the dorm life at your college.

I've lived in Patterson and Centennial for my 3 years and have loved both of them! Patterson, aka P-Town or P-Hall is an extremely good dorm known for having fun and helping the residence with anything ranging from studying to personal problems. Highly recommend living here for freshman year! Centennial is also a great dorm. It is right beside the Rec Center, so no excuse for that Freshman 15, it hosts the Sustella Market, and there is also the Sustella parking deck which offers plenty of close to home parking. The only negative quality I can think of is that it is located off of main campus which means longer bus rides and/or walking.

Describe the food and dining at your college.

The food on campus, not counting the dining halls, is pretty tasty, the downfalls though are the prices and the hours during breaks. If you live on campus, the hours aren't that bad of a problem, but if you live off campus or in Centennial, it is a little off putting to travel to campus just for some Chik-Fil-A or Nathan's.

What’s there to do for fun at your college?

My friends and I normally go to the Rec. Center for fun since there is a pool, but there are also bars located within walking distance of the school, a bowling alley and a movie theater up town, and sometimes a carnival comes through in the mall parking lot, which can also be in walking distance depending if you care to walk that far.
