Most universities/colleges don't allow students to get started on their majors until Sophomore or Junior year of college. As a Freshman at UOP I've already gotten a feel for what I will be doing as a sports medicine or Athletic Training major. Four weeks into classes and I've already learned how to tape ankles, wrists, and arches. I've also learned how to fit helmets, how to handle a person with a seizure, etc. Being a freshman at UOP, I've already been exposed to my major and can decide early on what I want and don't want to study in school. Many students have already decided that Athletic Training isn't for them because of this exposure.
Do you enjoy the experience at your school?
I did have a hard time getting used to being away from home, but this place is truly a great place to adjust. I'm surrounded by trees and green grass and fun people all the time. I've met lots of people whom I have a lot in common with and we've really hit it off! Plus there are many events here such as Tiger Nights (which are dances), Toga Parties, movie nights, fancy Fridays, and much much more!
Do you feel you’re getting value for the money you’re spending on college?
It's definitely a pricey school, but I feel like I'm getting a lot more adequate attention from my professors and they're always willing to help. Being in small classes, I'm able to get to know my teachers and they're able to get to know me! They have office hours and are always willing to stay after class to answer questions. It's great! Definitely pricey, but worth every penny.
Do you have any tips for prospective students?
Work hard and check this school out. It's a good school. I swear.
Which types of students will excel at your college?
Students who like the quiet suburban feel, or students who want to go to the East Coast but can't afford to. Walking onto this campus is like walking onto a school in the East, definitely with these brick buildings and tall trees which provide plenty of shade. Plus it's the 5th nicest campus in the US!
