Describe your college in three sentences.

The University of Mary-Hardin Baylor can be described as a tight knit community. There is a diverse range of people here with all sorts of backgrounds so making friends is very easy. The academics are excellent, the professors are all super helpful, and there is a wide range of student organizations and clubs to be involved in; thus making Mary Hardin-Baylor a unique university that you could call home.

Do you have any tips for prospective students?

I would advise you prospective students to come to one of the Preview Weekends! You get to stay in a dorm with a current freshman so you really get to experience the things that you would experience in your first semester at UMHB. I would also encourage you to try to visit during a game weekend for football or other sports so you can experience the school spirit. Ask your admissions counselors lots of questions! They will answer anything and everything to make sure that you are able to make the best decision possible.

Do you find there’s enough academic rigor at your school?

Most of the classes are challenging, but not so difficult that you cannot succeed. They make it possible for you to do work, maintain good grades, and still maintain an exiting social life. The professors truly care about you and will help you with anything. If you are having problems understanding things in class they will help you individually during their office hours, and there are free tutors available through the Center of Academic Excellence!

Describe the dorm life at your college.

There are 5 different girls dormitories and 3 different boys dorms. The girls have a lot as options as far as how many people they want to room with and whether or not that want a private or public bath. The boys have some of the same options but not as many as the girls do. The dorms feel like communities. At the beginning of the semester, we had Hall Wars to help us all get to know each other. Each dorm holds different fun events each weekend and the lobbies all have at least on TV and a pool table. The RA's are super nice and will help you with whatever you need no matter what time. They take the time to get to know you!

Describe the food and dining at your college.

Our university just opened a NEW student union this semester! Inside of it is an amazing cafeteria which is loads better than the previous Hardy Hall. They have a wide range of options such as a pizza bar, salad bar, sandwich bar, soups, burgers, stir fry, and some sort of home style choice at each meal! Also some days, there is a taco bar or wing bar, and in the mornings their is an omelet bar and waffle bar. The people who work in the cafeteria take the time to ask about your day and make sure that your dining experience is as best as it can be. Also, the Union has a Starbucks, 1845 Grill and Chick-fil-a inside in which students can use their Dining Dollars to eat at as well.

What’s there to do for fun at your college?

There are TONS of things to do for fun! If you like to plan events and be creative in finding fun things for other students to do, the Campus Activities Board is for you. If you like sports and other things, the campus rec and gym are open till 11pm each night and there are various intramural seasons that go on all year! If you like to be involved in campus ministries, there is the BSM, Wednesday night bible studies, and worship in the Quad. Our student union has an Xbox 360 and an Xbox One upstairs as well as a shuffle board, giant iPad like tables, and couches for you to lounge in with your friends. There are different fun events that go on like Own the Night, an event that happens every other Thursday night where we dance the night away to all sorts of music! There are hammocks and swings around campus to sit and read in. There are math clubs, chemistry clubs, and all sorts of things! There is never a dull day on campus!

Do you feel you’re getting value for the money you’re spending on college?

While the university can be very expensive, there is financial aid available for those who seek it out. They have a wide range of academic scholarships as well as need-based scholarships. But the cost is worth every penny. You get the highest quality of academic service: free tutors, smaller classes, and professors that go out of their way to ensure that you succeed. You get a huge variety of campus activities all for FREE! The dorm life is amazing as well as the food. And most importantly you are able to make lasting relationships as you come along side your fellow classmates in your journey towards graduation. Don't let money deter you from applying! You will not regret your decision!

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

There is the smokers circle: a clearing in the grass with benches for those who smoke. The circle is located exactly 50-ft within several of the dorms; thus, making it a perfect spot for those who care to smoke. Luther Memorial is located in a field. The memorial represents one of the first dormitories that burned down many years ago. The amazing thing is that every single girl made it out of there alive without being hurt! What' even more ironic is that during homecoming week, the school lights the letters UMHB on fire over the pillars which once burned down all those years ago. Burt Pond is another location on campus that carries it superstitious belief. It is said that if a boyfriend and girlfriend walk around the pond 3 times while holding hands, they will get married. There are rumors that Presser Hall, the music building, is haunted by the ghost of a girl who committed suicide their many years ago. They claim that she will play the piano, but no one is brave enough to stay late enough to see if the claims are true. There are lots of other traditions and locations on campus that would take ages to share! That's what makes UMHB such a great place!

How would you describe campus safety? Do you feel safe on campus?

The campus police patrol campus 24/7. They send out alerts to students of suspicious activity to ensure our safety. If you feel uncomfortable walking to your dorm after an event, they will escort you to be sure you are safe. They will let you in your building if you forget your key or Cru Card, they will jump your car, and they do everything in their power to keep you feeling secure.
