I have attended this college 2 years to date, and I love it! The campus is small enough where you don't feel lost or out of place, but big enough to where you still feel like you are part of an exclusive community. The staff on campus (teachers, faculty, etc.) are so friendly, and when accepted, I received LOTS of financial aid.
Do you have any tips for prospective students?
Take a tour of the campus! When I went to take a tour, that was when I fell in love with the campus. Make sure, if you are transferring in credits, that your credits will actually go towards your intended major and that the university will accept them.
Do you find there’s enough academic rigor at your school?
This university prides itself on having top-notch professors who really know the material they are teaching. Not only do the professors know their subjects well, but every single professor I've ever had has taken an eager interest in the success of their students. They make themselves accessible so that you can fully learn the material.
Describe the dorm life at your college.
Dorm life is great! I loved the dorm I stayed in, and you have your own mini community within each dorm. The dorm directors and RA's are always really nice and helpful.
Describe the food and dining at your college.
The food when I first attended UMHB was, I'll be honest, TERRIBLE. But very shortly after my first semester there, they installed a feedback system where in the cafeteria there was a box where students could place comments on the food in a box. In just a few months, the food quality greatly increased. The SUB, which is separate has great food. And the new student union building which should be finished in the fall of 2013 will feature a Chick-Fil-A and Starbucks, or so we've been told.
What’s there to do for fun at your college?
Lots of students love going to the Belton Dam and other nature parks surrounding the lake. We have a movie theatre right down the street from the school, and several malls in the surrounding area. Belton and Temple may be small cities, but you can find fun stuff to do.
Do you feel you’re getting value for the money you’re spending on college?
UMHB is an expensive university, however, they accommodate for this by giving lots of financial aid to incoming students. The university also puts the money to good use by constantly improving the facilities students use on campus, like the new stadium and student union building being constructed that will be completed by the fall of 2013, and the new field house for athletes. The campus always looks beautiful due to a dedicated gardening staff.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus
There is a great tradition on campus called Running Man, which is a game played at nighttime and across the whole campus. We also have great campus events throughout the year, like Stunt Night, which is a night full of each class performing funny skits. There is also a Miss UMHB Pageant and a Crusader Knights contest each year.
Which types of students will excel at your college?
UMHB is really great for any kind of student in my opinion. The only students that would not be happy at UMHB are students looking forward to Greek life. UMHB has no sororities or fraternities on campus, but they make up for it with all the clubs and organizations on campus.
Are you involved in any clubs or activities?
There are many clubs on campus, separated by categories. There are community service organizations, like ASTRA and The Rotaract Club of UMHB. There are academic organizations like the Nurses Student Association, Delta Psi Theta (Math Club, not a fraternity), and other specific academic interest clubs. There are even special interest clubs like the Campus Activities Board, Film Cru, and the Residence Hall Association. There are also leadership clubs, such as University Ambassadors, Student Government Association, and First Year Council.
Are you involved in any clubs or activities?
There is no Greek life at UMHB aside from the Greek academic clubs.
How would you describe campus safety? Do you feel safe on campus?
I always feel extremely safe at school. First of all, Belton has a low crime rate. Second of all, the police staff on campus is friendly and always available. There are emergency poles located near residence halls and around campus so that in case of an emergency you can go to the pole and contact the police immediately.
