ULM is a great environment to begin your journey of exploring what you want to do when you 'grow-up'. There are really great professors who want to see you succeed and provide you with all the necessary tools to do so. Lastly, ULM may be a smaller campus, but this is not a disadvantage, you feel closer to the student body, not just another face in the crowd.
Do you have any tips for prospective students?
I would advise students that are looking into a university like ULM to check out what we offer. We offer a great variety of majors that can be applied in many different aspects of the career field, but we may not be the best college to attend if you want to do something more specialized. I would also advise future students to look into what other students have said about their experiences because those people have had real experience and can give you many GPA helpful tips!
Do you find there’s enough academic rigor at your school?
ULM may not compare to a state institution, but we do have difficult classes, also. You do have to crack a book, pay attention in class, and actually go to class. Our classes our smaller and this can actually be a plus when you are in need of a little specialized attention to understand the material. The professors don't want you to fail, you get out of it what you put in.
Describe the dorm life at your college.
Many of the dorms are in disrepair and people do not take proper care of the spaces they live in. I would not immediately recommend living in the dorms unless it was Commons II, but even that dorm has its issues.
Describe the food and dining at your college.
Schulze Cafeteria has great tasting food most days! There's a nice variety, and always a good Fried Chicken Wednesday to look forward to! The staff is very welcoming with a nice environment to enjoy your meal in.
What’s there to do for fun at your college?
For fun at ULM you could do many of the numerous possibilities available to you in the moderately sized city of Monroe! There are numerous sporting events that you could attend during the week, go out and support the Warhawks! You could possibly canoe on the beautiful Bayou Desiard. If you want to be active in the community, there are tons of clubs available at your fingertips for community reach-out! Also, during the week these clubs will host events to make things interesting and get you involved.
Do you feel you’re getting value for the money you’re spending on college?
I love free/discounted food! There are plenty of ways to get your fix. Local religious/college chapters will host discounted lunch days to help the student body's pocketbook and to help fund their mission trips! Your money goes to a good cause! Also, right on campus is a Starbucks that will have discounted coffee many days of the semester!
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus
An unusual tradition we have at ULM is for Freshmen to run through the fountain in the Quad for good luck during their semester. A great place I love to gather my thoughts is the seventh floor terrace of the Library that looks out upon Bayou Desiard and half of the campus.
Are you involved in any clubs or activities?
There are plenty of organizations at ULM for everyone interested in anything ranging from community reach-out to political beliefs. Getting involved in a number of organizations will help you get better connected for your future and help you find great, relatable friends!
How would you describe campus safety? Do you feel safe on campus?
Our campus police are always out and about and are never far away! We have Emergency Poles for better increased safety and the campus is relatively lit up after dark. I would still not advise going anywhere alone late at night because even with the best campus safety nothing is impossible.
