Review of University of Alaska Anchorage

Do you feel you’re learning a lot?

The professors at UAA, like any school, are a mixed bag. There are some professors that are absolutely amazing, whose motivation and passion for their subject will motivate you to go above and beyond. And there are, of course, professors who lack this quality. However, if you put in a little work (using ratemyprofessors.com or talking to other students who have been around longer) you can get an incredible and in depth education at UAA.

Do you enjoy the experience at your school?

I absolutely love being at UAA. It can be overwhelming at first, because there are so many students; it can be hard to know where to go to find that sense of community because it is a commuter campus. You can find it though by pursuing things that interest you; by joining clubs and getting to know others in my degree program, I've found a wonderful sense of community, almost a second family at UAA.

Do you feel you’re getting value for the money you’re spending on college?

Tuition is going up at UAA, which is pretty sad. However, compared to many other schools, it is incredibly affordable, especially if you are an Alaska resident. The cost of going to a school in another state for one semester could have paid for at least two semesters at UAA. And in addition, you get printing in the library and some fantastic classes. (Although paying for parking can be painful).

Do you have any tips for prospective students?

I would recommend that prospective students speak to someone from the department of the degree that they are thinking of pursuing. Although the advisers at the general college can be helpful, professors from the departments can give you a better idea of what to expect in the degree you are looking at. When you start at UAA, start looking at all your options; study abroad (which can be affordable with scholarships), job opportunities, clubs, student government, etc. It's amazing what all is available.

Which types of students will excel at your college?

UAA is great for anyone who is a self directed learner. You can kind of tailor your college experience to your own preferences and the way you want your degree to be. If you like to be more independent, there is a good amount of wiggle room at UAA as you do your degree.
