from Brooklyn, NY
Describe your college in three sentences.
Can be challenging even to the smartest person.
It's a small school so literally everyone knows each other after a while.
The academic opportunities are endless
Do you have any tips for prospective students?
Try to be at the top of your class and do well on standardized tests
Spend a lot of time on your application. Cooper's application is one of the longer ones. Make it unique and about yourself and get a lot of people to read it and give you feedback.
Do you find there’s enough academic rigor at your school?
Everyone has a different level of academic load that they can handle. Generally it's challenging to everybody. A couple kids flunk out every year. Even if you're a super genius. There are many opportunities to learn more and do more. So if you're the type of person who likes challenges. This is the placeGenerally most of the students here struggle in freshmen year because it takes time to adjust from high school.
Describe the dorm life at your college.
The dorms are decent. Being in Manhattan it's more expensive than dorming at other schools. However the view is pretty nice. Dorms are only for first year students. So after the first year most students get an apartment nearby. Having an apartment is pretty nice and it's much less restrictive than dorms.
Describe the food and dining at your college.
There's no main dining hall because Cooper is a very small school. However Cooper is in the East Village so there is a ton of good food nearby. Also the dorms are equipped with kitchens for you to cook your own meals.
What’s there to do for fun at your college?
New York City is amazing. Especially if it's your first time living here. There's lots to do and lots to see so it'll never be bored.
Do you feel you’re getting value for the money you’re spending on college?
Cooper Union used to be tuition free which is pretty great for middle class families who aren't eligible for financial aid. However the school is no longer free at the moment. That being said every student receives a half tuition scholarship. So the tuition starts at 20,000 excluding financial aid which a lot of students receive. The school will be returning to a tuition free model as soon as possible. It's a great education for a relatively good price.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus
There isn't really a campus. Cooper is comprised of two academic buildings which are right next to each other. A lot of people say New York City is their campus, which is kind of true so that's pretty cool.
Which types of students will excel at your college?
Students who like to be challenged
Are you involved in any clubs or activities?
Lots of clubs and things to do.
Are you involved in any clubs or activities?
There is one fraternity. No sororities. The fraternity is pretty cool. It's full of smart guys who like to occasionally have fun.
