Rachel's Review

Review of Taylor University

from Terre Haute, IN

In which ways do you feel you are learning and growing?

I am learning and growing mentally, spiritually, and socially. Taylor has taught me so much about intentional relationships and community, it's led me closer to God both as a member of the body and in my personal relationship with Him, and it's helped me to manage my emotions in a more healthy way.

How are you enjoying your time at this college?

I am enjoying it so much, it so easily became my second home. Adjusting was hard, but I've made so many great relationships with professors and peers that make me feel at home here. I am so excited to continue for 3 more years.

What tips can you share with prospective students?

Be okay with the uncomfortable things! I'm super type A and like to have a plan, but stepping out of my comfort zone to do things I typically wouldn't has helped me to get to know more people and feel more at home in this community. Get involved in things and find your group on campus, don't try and be your own community without anyone in your circle.

What qualities do you have that have best prepared you for success at this institution?

Time management, friendliness, and vulnerability best prepared me for success. I'm responsible for all of the time in my day so I've had to learn to manage it. I'm very friendly and outgoing and that has helped me to make lasting friendships. I'm also vulnerable and that has helped me grow closer to God and to people.

In what ways do you feel this college challenges students academically?

It's a challenge - the professors have great trust in students and so it challenges your honesty and your responsibility for your work. You can do the bare minimum to get by, but the professors will challenge you to do more than that and to learn how to be a better learner.

How would you describe the dorm life at this school?

Intentional. We have all ages on all the floors and dorms and it's made for such a great community. I've been able to learn from people older than me and will be able to do the same for incoming freshman.

How would you describe the food and dining options?

I would say it's not stellar but there are a ton of options so you can definitely find something you like.

In your experience, what is there to do for fun at this college?

There's always events going on around campus. But even when there aren't planned events, there are constantly people hanging out outside playing games or getting dinner together or just going for a walk. The floors do lots of small groups, prayer nights, and family nights which always leaves time to get involved in something.

In what clubs or organiziations have you participated and how have they impacted your overall experience?

I got involved in Basics Jr through a church near campus and it was so much fun, it helped me get to know people in my city not just at my school. Now I am a co director for this club next year. I also work the front desk at my building and am now the manager, and that has helped me foster great relationships with people in my building while earning some money.

Are there any quirky or unique traditions that make your college special?

It's so intentional, it's so fun, it's so unique. We have lots of insider traditions that go along with typical Christian college stereotypes. We do pick-a-dates, which is when a floor invites a "date" to an event. We also have unique Taylor events such as Air Band or Nostalgia Night that the students go crazy for. And, every week we have Purple Friday!

How does this institution support campus safety or mental health and wellness programs?

There is a counseling center that is free access to all students and I've heard phenomenal things about it! The professors care about campus safety and mental wellness, they will get a meal or coffee with you to talk about life or mentor you. But the experts in the counseling center are also phenomenal and willing to help students who seek it out.

How has your college supported your career development and future goals?

The elementary education program is PHENOMENAL! I have already had field experience in a local school and will have one each year! The program really helps prepare me to be a teacher and has helped me explore all the options for teaching different ages and subjects. It is a great way to progress from just observing to full on student teaching!
