Review of Southern Methodist University

Do you feel you’re learning a lot?

My experience at SMU has been very rewarding since it has open up for me many opportunities. After taking organic chemistry, I realized that I have a great passion for learning about how things happen at the atomic and molecular level. In addition, I realized that I have a passion for research because in a way or another, you are creating knowledge by finding new discoveries. I decided that instead of going for an MD only, I want to pursue an MD/PhD degree because I get to combine the two things I like the most - being a physician and being a scientist.

Do you enjoy the experience at your school?

Two of my friends from high school have transferred in to SMU this semester, so it was fun hanging out with them. However, I also made new friends who are very nice. The campus is really pretty, so you'll enjoy going to SMU. They basically have every type of restaurant you desire - whether on campus, or just right next to it.

Do you feel you’re getting value for the money you’re spending on college?

SMU's tuition is kind of expensive, considering the fact that it went up to almost $37,000 this year. However, if you are a good student, there might a chance for you to get some merit-based scholarships. In addition, you can get scholarships from the department itself. For example, I got a scholarship from the chemistry department after declaring my major.

Do you have any tips for prospective students?

Be organized! I know you might hear that a lot, but seriously, it's true. High school is different that college. In high school, you used to have quizzes and homework all the time to keep you on track. In college, however, all you have is exams, and they basically make up 100% percent of your grade. No quizzes, no homework. So try to stay on top of things. Try to make a calendar or schedule that will help you with time management. If you have any trouble with a certain subject, make use of the ALEC tutoring center - it's free! And don't forget - always work out at the Dedman Life Center because it might be your only way to relieve the stress.

Which types of students will excel at your college?

SMU would be great for out-going people because everybody just talks to everybody! The students here are very nice and welcoming, so you'll always find a group that you belong to. They love to hang out, but they are always considerate about having to study for a quiz or exam. In addition, SMU has a good Greek life. So if you are interested in joining a sorority or fraternity, then SMU would be the great place to go to.
