Ouachita has been an incredible experience over the past four years of my life. The faculty is second to NONE, with their involvement and interest in the studies and lives of their students. The atmosphere that OBU produces is one that you really have to experience to truly grasp - it is simply amazing.
Do you have any tips for prospective students?
The students and faculty at Ouachita are friendly, caring, and abundantly helpful. They want to make your experience wonderful so do not hesitate to ask questions or give them a call. If you are taking a walk on campus be prepared for LOTS of friendly smiles and people asking you if they can help you find something. This campus is truly ONE OF A KIND.
Do you find there’s enough academic rigor at your school?
The core curriculum is definitely rigorous. Depending on what teacher you get it can be down-right HARD! The great thing about Ouachita is that the teachers have a heart, and will go out of their way to help you in whatever way they can. If you are struggling - do NOT hesitate to let them know!
Describe the dorm life at your college.
One key word is important when speaking of Ouachita's dorm life - FRIENDSHIPS. The freshmen dorms are not the greatest (these are being renovated to be REALLY NICE from what I hear), but they are the absolute best as far as increasing mingling and friendship growth and don't get me wrong they are totally livable! Gosser Hall is the nicest of the dorms on campus and they are really great! I personally lived in them for three years (after escaping the tight quarters of Francis Crawford for an entire year)! Maintenance takes care of basically everything you need, and the dorm mom and RA's are fabulous!
Basically - Ouachita Community RULES! :)
Describe the food and dining at your college.
Ok lets get real... who WANTS to eat in the Caf? It really isn't bad food, you just get a little tired of it after 4 years. The workers though - SOME OF THE NICEST PEOPLE ON CAMPUS! At night Mr. Ricky will put on a Michael Jackson CD and the whole caf will sing along and attempt to moonwalk! The ladies working the line are simply wonderful, and make the experience fun! :) They are very accommodating when it comes to unusual diets as well. They always offer a vegetarian dish and have a special back room for people with food allergies (Gluten free stuff, soy milk, almond milk, rice milk, etc.) If you have a special diet and let someone on the staff know... they will get EXACTLY what you want! :)
What’s there to do for fun at your college?
EVERYTHING... Campus activities is ALWAYS buzzing with fun things to do on campus! Social Clubs run a ton of campus wide activities as well. If you don't know what these are... look them up... I am POSITIVE that you will find some pics somewhere on the internet!
Tiger Traks
Tiger Tunes
Tiger Serve Day
Mission Trips (at least 2-3 per year)
Elrod Center (service activities and projects)
Elder Serve
Boys and Girls Club Volunteers
etc.
I could go on forever!!! Look it up and check it out!!!
Do you feel you’re getting value for the money you’re spending on college?
Ok... YES Ouachita IS EXPENSIVE, but I have to say that I believe it was worth EVERY PENNY! The people are unforgettable, and my overall experience was incredible. The education that I received was second to none, and I feel adequately prepared as I am about to pursue a graduate degree up north in the fall.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus
OHHHHH YES. You really can't fully understand this until you GO and EXPERIENCE it for yourself.
Tiger for Life!
Oh... and of course I have a bit of tradition from my sisters! Haha!!! #socialclubprobs #EEE #SAI
Which types of students will excel at your college?
Ouachita is GREAT for students with a willingness to learn. Growth at OBU happens mentally, spiritually, and emotionally. You definitely have to WANT to be here, otherwise this is NOT the place for you. People who don't LOVE it coming in, usually don't just learn to love it. You need to have a EAGERNESS to GROW.
Are you involved in any clubs or activities?
OH YEA. CONSTANT.
Are you involved in any clubs or activities?
The greek life on campus does exist, but it has been overtaken by the Social Clubs on campus. The actual fraternities and sororities that are on campus are usually only within the majors and have very strict restrictions by their National Headquarters and OBU. OBU wanted to support a more friendly environment so Social Clubs were created rather than actual fraternities and sororities. This idea however, backfired a little bit because the Social Clubs have simply BECOME sororities and fraternities. OBU has recently cracked the whip on hazing however, so there is VERY LITTLE TO NO HAZING.
How would you describe campus safety? Do you feel safe on campus?
THE CAMPUS ITSELF IS VERY SAFE. The atmosphere is truly the best around. I am a female and I had NO PROBLEM walking across campus in the wee hours of the morning by myself. It is honestly VERY SAFE.
NOW... let me explain my three star marking - The actual safety officers however, are NOT HELPFUL AT ALL. I really can't express or explain this until you actually have to DEAL with them. They simply leave you more frustrated than when you went to them to begin with!
