Review of North Central University

from Hermantown, MN

Describe your college in three sentences.

North Central University is the true deal when it comes to Christian Colleges. Christ is at the center of the experience. Many world-class Bible scholars are on staff, and genuinely care to go the extra miles for students (especially when you show interest!)

Do you have any tips for prospective students?

Attend NCU Days to get a well-rounded experience. Attend a chapel service, eat in the cafeteria, and be sure to attend classes. Don't just sleep in! Try to attend at least one Bible class to get a feel for them.

Do you find there’s enough academic rigor at your school?

It varies tremendously between professors. Generals tend to be easier. Professors in general tend to be rather forgiving of genuine excuses for late work. Maybe it's just because of Christ working in me, but I feel that I really learn information well here and am not struggling through coursework.

Describe the dorm life at your college.

I can say (at least for the floor I'm on) there is a great dorm experience! Residents are mindful of each other and most partake in random floor outings and activities. There is a high level of community and concern for one-another. The only complaints I have are on random occasions when the heat doesn't work as expected. Floors are single-gender, and each floor is assigned a brother or sister floor for community purposes. Quiet hours are in effect from 11pm till 9:00am each night/morning. Dorms are open for visitors on the weekends, Friday-Sunday.

Describe the food and dining at your college.

There are two main options for dining: the cafeteria (limited hours) and deli (extended hours). Both offer take-out services. For the cafeteria, a $5 deposit can be given in order to receive a green box, with which you can stuff with as much food as you're capable of doing. Upon returning the box, your deposit is returned in full. Staples in the deli are sub sandwiches, grilled chicken sandwiches, chicken tender sandwiches, hamburgers, pizza slices, Uncrustables, salad, etc. Staples in the cafeteria are a build-your-own sandwich line (with grill), salad bar, taco bar, hot dog bar, dessert area with six ice creams, and many beverage choices (including a new iced coffee brewer)

What’s there to do for fun at your college?

Located in Downtown Minneapolis, there are many options for fun near campus. Just driving a short 5-10 minutes will get you to countless restaurants, a theater, grocery stores, bakeries, scenic areas near the Mississippi River, etc. On campus, options are slightly more limited. There is a game area with ping-pong, pool and Foosball in the lobby of Carlson Hall. There is also a free-access weight and exercise room and a full-size gym. Plenty of on-campus organizations also host regular events.

Do you feel you’re getting value for the money you’re spending on college?

North Central University is one of the cheapest private universities in the Midwest. Many scholarships are also made available to students based on academic merit, musicianship, athletic ability, etc. Room and board costs are honestly less than what you'd pay living on your own outside of college.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Too many to count! There is an annual snowball fight at midnight on the *NEW TURF SOCCER FIELD* once snow depth is appropriate.

Which types of students will excel at your college?

Those who are Christians or inquiring about Christianity and want to develop a genuine relationship with their Creator through deep knowledge, relationship, and experience. Also, North Central University is great for those looking to become ministers, musicians, business people, educators, and even more!

Are you involved in any clubs or activities?

-Encounter: practical aid and prayer for those in the downtown club area -Release: prayer and practical action to prevent trafficking -Athletics: many -Intramural sports -Bro-Sis floor community -Exercise/weightlifting -ASL (American Sign Language) -Writing and student newspaper -Student leadership (student government, RA, DL) -Student employment (housekeeping, maintenance, computer lab, tech support, audio/visual support) -Music of all types -Many more

Are you involved in any clubs or activities?

There are no fraternities or sororities.

How would you describe campus safety? Do you feel safe on campus?

All students enter the building through ID cards. Doors automatically lock behind. After 1:30am, returning students are required to check in with security for safety purposes. There are nearly a hundred security cameras continually recording and seeking out motion. Dorm rooms are, of course, lockable. There is a full-time 24/7 security staff at North Central. (Many students are also employed by security). They offer continual patrolling of campus areas, free van rides to locations three blocks or nearer from campus, etc. All are trained to handle disturbances, and no significant issues have been brought to my attention during my stay here. The campus security and safety report from the last few years shows minimal on-campus theft, and very few nearby disturbances for an urbanized, downtown population.
