MSOE is a top tier engineering school that will get you an excellent job after only 4 years of college. Some of the social aspects are lacking compared to some schools, but they still exist. It is a very small campus with even smaller class sizes.
Do you have any tips for prospective students?
MSOE's social atmosphere seems nonexistent if you don't look for things to do and people to hang out with. If you want to talk to people or do things, pay attention to your email, as many social events are posted through this medium. In addition, learn to be organized, setting aside times to study and do homework, as MSOE has a very tough course load. At the same time, don't expect to get a 4.0 throughout your time here, as only 7 people in school history have.
Do you find there’s enough academic rigor at your school?
MSOE is by far one of the most challenging schools out there. With many students dropping out or transferring by their sophomore year, it requires a great deal of effort from the students to stay on task in order to succeed. However, the teachers are usually quite fair about deadlines and have many office hours if you need additional help.
Describe the dorm life at your college.
The dorms are not set up very well to provide much opportunity for social interaction, but laying out your room effectively can. There are no common rooms on the floors (which is why using your room effectively is important) so there isn't a good large place to meet with floor mates nearby. However, there is cleaning staff for the hallways and bathrooms, as well as a study floor in one of the buildings. It should also be noted that these areas can be found in many of the other campus building, all within a block from the residence halls.
Describe the food and dining at your college.
A meal plan is required for students living in the residence halls. The food isn't great, but the cafeteria is all you can eat. In addition, there are two campus restaurants that use the meal plan which offer good food. You should plan on making your own meals in a microwave to have variety from the cafeteria food as well as bringing your own snacks.
What’s there to do for fun at your college?
The Kern Center is a state of the art athletic facility that is free for students and $5 for guests. In addition, many of the students have hobbies to fill their free time. Since campus is located in downtown Milwaukee, many great venues (museums, theaters, etc.) are just a short walk away.
Do you feel you’re getting value for the money you’re spending on college?
I would give MSOE a five star rating, since academically, the payoff (95% placement rate, average starting salary of $56,000 a year, in and out in 4 years) is worth the tuition, but the requirement to stay in the dorms with a meal plan when living off campus is much cheaper lowers the value greatly.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus
The science building is a Frankenstein of architecture. Originally two separate buildings, the school decided to combine them in to one. However, the varying heights of ceilings and floors at different elevations along the slight incline of the block the building is on causes the building to resemble a maze of sorts, with the common joke being that after four years you'll still be lucky to find a classroom without getting lost once or twice.
Which types of students will excel at your college?
MSOE is good for students who can learn fundamentals and theory during lecture and put it into practice during labs. If you are interested in learning about your major from the start, this is a good place for you. It should also be noted that MSOE requires dedication and hard work towards academics not seen at most schools, so students need to be driven and organized to do well in classes.
Are you involved in any clubs or activities?
There are many clubs and activities at MSOE. These include intramural sports, professional associations relating to the majors offered, international associations, and much more.
Are you involved in any clubs or activities?
I have not participated in Greek life, but there are several fraternities and sororities that maintain an active social atmosphere around campus with both each other and the general student population.
How would you describe campus safety? Do you feel safe on campus?
MSOE is located in one of the safest places in Milwaukee and has a full team of Public Safety officers. These officers perform such duties as monitoring the entrances of both dorms, patrolling campus in cars, and responding to emergencies. In addition, there are safety poles throughout campus (which is quite small) to aid Public Safety in its duties.
