It is not as difficult as I expected, but I hear it gets tougher after freshman year. Unlike the myth that says attendance doesn't matter, it does; some teachers make attendance/participation a part of the grade. While the courses can be rigorous, it's easy to find friends and have a good time.
Do you have any tips for prospective students?
Leave your dorm room during welcome week. What you do during welcome week can make or break your experience. If I hadn't stepped out of my comfort zone and introduced myself to so many people, my life now would be so dull. Make friends. Branch out. You will not regret it.
Do you find there’s enough academic rigor at your school?
The grading scale is very intimidating. Also, unlike Ivy schools who curve and make everyone's GPA's higher than they should be, MSOE has only had about 14 alums graduate with 4.0s since it was established. It takes a lot of hard work, but the 94% job placement rate means future employers know graduates are cream of the crop.
Describe the dorm life at your college.
Best part of college. I love having friends just a few doors down from me. While it takes some getting used to and a lot of prioritizing, friends make the college experience.
Describe the food and dining at your college.
Cafeteria food isn't the best. Roscoe's is good for awhile, but gets tiring eventually. Skylight food is delicious, but limited options. Ramen tastes pretty good, though. It actually tastes better in college than ever before, especially after experiencing caf food. Also, Panera, Noodles, Qdoba, and Buffalo Wild Wings are within walking distance. A grocery store is a block away as well.
What’s there to do for fun at your college?
Walk around and experience the city! The lake is close by so it's nice when the weather is sunny and warm. Hang out with friends and just live it up :)
Are you involved in any clubs or activities?
The greek orgs are very different from stereotypical frats and sororities. They do drink, but definitely not as much as TV portrays them out to be. They do actually care about their members' education and helping them succeed into becoming well-rounded people.
