The classes proceed through assigned material at a steady and comfortable pace and teachers are demanding yet accomodating. The majority of the students are intrinsically motivated for success as well, reinforcing much of what is learned outside of class. The Mikwaukee School of Engineering is a challenging but rewarding experience, in all respects.
Do you have any tips for prospective students?
Studying is an essential tool for academic success, no matter your previous high school background. Make good choices in friends and use your friends to help review materials if you have the same instructor.
Do you find there’s enough academic rigor at your school?
Very few class days feel drawn-out or useless, so every class is important in understanding the concepts that follow after. That being said, a missed day is truly impairing in the long run. Academic integrity and discipline is important for success at MSOE.
The classes are small enough that professors will notice a student's absence, and they take note of those students as well. The teachers are easy to contact, however, and a simple email can inform the professor of a student's predicament if they overslept or cannot make it to class. The instructors are more tahn willing to respond to the email with all the relevant lesson material and inform the student of the content of a lecture.
Describe the dorm life at your college.
Education is important, but dorm life provides an invaluable opportunity to meet new people. Too many students hide in their rooms, only going out to attend their classes or our to eat. In MSOE they set aside an entire week after moving in to socialize and meet new people through activities set by our Residential Advisors, Academic Advisors, and Fraternities to end the summer with a bang. I've met more people that I respect and admire in MSOE than I ever knew in high school!
Describe the food and dining at your college.
The food is quite varied from day to day and it is almost always satisfactory. It's provided very cheaply, 3$ per meal, in buffet style dining so students can eat to their content. They offer fruits, salad, and veggies every meal. As far as nutrition goes, they give students every opportunity to maintain a healthy diet. For those who are looking for a little more flavor, several restaurants nearby are available to cater to the hungry college student, sometimes with discounted prices too.
What’s there to do for fun at your college?
I go on walks frequently around town to get to know the area. The lakefront is simply breathtaking and the musuem is quite a sight to see. There is almost always a group or greek event going on during the week, often without chargning admission and at the same time offering free food and drink. Who doesn't like free stuff?
Do you feel you’re getting value for the money you’re spending on college?
The initial price for the College is staggering to consider, but MSOE does everything in their power to ensure that the average person can attend. They offer a stupendous financial aid package of 12,000$ per year, amounting to almost half the average student's total tuition. They offer work to students in need of an income, and provide services of all types to ensure the experience is a good one. They provide every student with a computer and provide any and all tech support necessary for it's upkeep. They also hold group tutoring sessions and offer priate tutoring as well to any student, whether those students are currently earning B's or F's. For the serious student, they give us ervery opportunity possible to succeed.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus
The Painted Rock is a rock painted weekly by the local Sororities and Fraternities. It's covered in decades of accumulated layers of paint, likely several inches thick.
Which types of students will excel at your college?
Students who have an aptitude for mathematics and chemistry and wish to exercise these aptitudes are encouraged to come to MSOE for Engineering. They also offer Nursing degrees for those interested in the Healthcare field and Business Degrees for the industrious.
Are you involved in any clubs or activities?
They offer all sorts of sports including Frisbee, Hockey volleyball, soccer, basketball, and martial arts clubs for the athletically inclined. The Kern Center is not only the campus ice rink (Available for Free Skate nights weekly) but a gym, providing a track for running even through the winter and various types of exercise equipment.
Aside from physical fitness, MSOE is stocked with clubs of all colors, including photography, theatre, robotics, and vehicle design. If the club doesn't exist yet, it can be created too!
How would you describe campus safety? Do you feel safe on campus?
The Campus itself is quiet. Campus security Officers patrol the area and check the I.D's of every student who enters. Even the city is mostly peaceful, but police sirens do go speeding down the road occasionally. I have no qualms about walking on campus anytime of day, but I wouldn't venture out into Milwaukee past 8 pm without a group of friends.
