Ryan's Review

Review of McDaniel College

from LA Plata, MD

Describe your college in three sentences.

The campus is absolutely beautiful. The teachers are always there to help when possible. The campus atmosphere is calm, relaxed, and you can get to know everyone on campus without too much difficulty if you so choose.

Do you have any tips for prospective students?

Regarding the price required to attend, don't let that frighten you off. They're very good with giving out financial aid to those who need it, making this school possible to attend even for those with less than stellar financial situations.

Do you find there’s enough academic rigor at your school?

The classes do ask for you to put effort into them, but not too much for you to handle, and the teachers are available to help you understand the material after class or during their office hours.

Describe the dorm life at your college.

Can't vouch for the regular freshman dorms, as i live in the Honors dorms, but these dorms are great. Small like any other dorm, but each room comes with an air conditioner window unit in the hotter months while the other dorms don't. Hows that for incentive to do well in school, huh? These dorms have smaller floor sizes, with only say, 7 dorm rooms per floor, but that means that those people get closer as friends than those on dorm floors with dozens of rooms.

Describe the food and dining at your college.

A lot of people may try to hate on the cafeteria food, but that's because they've become a bit jaded to it. The food is great, and always has a great variety. The only thing i can say, is to not wait until the last second to go get food, because at that point, some of the food may not be as good as it could be. Also, included in the meal plan are vouchers for the restaurant on campus, called the Pub. (and no, this does not mean it has alcohol. nice try.) The food there is always cooked for you after you order, and the wait time is reasonably short, and the only exception is the lunch rush when there could be ten orders in line to be filled at a time, all of which are trying to be made at the same time. Even then, the wait is only a few minutes longer than normal.

Do you feel you’re getting value for the money you’re spending on college?

The school is very good about giving out enough financial aid to allow even those from lower income families to attend. I would know, I'm one of them.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

During freshman orientation, after the Convocation speech, all of the students file out to the center of campus, to a spot known as Red Square, and every student rings the bell there to signify their entering the college. The only time this bell is rung again by a student is upon graduation. That night, the students are a part of the candlewalk ceremony, where each student is given an unlit candle and they file in two lines around campus, through the Arch into Big Baker Memorial Church. Once inside, every candle is lit, and the lights are turned off. This is a symbol for the students going from darkness into the light of higher knowledge, and how it is all of us together that brings this about.

Are you involved in any clubs or activities?

There's a multitude of clubs to join if you so please, and there are always events to attend, every few weeks, and sometimes every week or every day during a week. If you're the kind of person to attend these kinds of things, you will not be for want of such a thing here.

Are you involved in any clubs or activities?

Can be a big part of your life on campus, but you don't feel left out if you don't participate, as you might on other college campuses

How would you describe campus safety? Do you feel safe on campus?

All of the campus safety officers I've met have been polite and helpful, as well as quick to assist whenever you have problems, even if that problem is being locked out of your dorm room when your roommate (if you have one) can't get you in.
