Review of Marquette University

from Wisconsin

Do you feel you’re learning a lot?

I have just completed the first semester of my freshman year and am amazed by how much I have learned, both inside and outside the classroom. High school prepared me well for the challenging courses, but at Marquette, everything came full circle. I was able to connect facts from Biology to formulas learned in Chemistry and relate information from Theology to dates I had learned in high school history courses. There are so many course options, opportunities to study abroad (which many upperclassmen recommend- learning about another culture first-hand is a plus!), and participate in research with faculty. The professors are willing to help, whether it is during their office hours or after class.

Do you enjoy the experience at your school?

After visiting Marquette for the first time, I knew that it was the right school for me. Campus is downtown Milwaukee- which is very exciting- but when I am walking to class near the beautiful chapel, flower garden, and huge green space, I don't even realize that I am in the city. I have met so many unique people and had many exciting experiences. There is always something going on, whether its a basketball game at the Bradley Center, a scavenger hunt around the city of Milwaukee with friends from your dorm, Marquette's own version of Iron Chef, or a pick-up game of soccer, Frisbee, or football wherever there's room. As a sophomore, I hope to work as a campus tour guide in order to show others all that Marquette has to offer. I truly feel at home. We are Marquette!

Do you feel you’re getting value for the money you’re spending on college?

Marquette is a private university, which does make it more expensive than a private school. Remember to file the FAFSA, which can help you qualify for grants or student loans. There are also many private scholarships available, both on the Marquette website and in your local community. Make a list of high school extracurriculars, academics, and volunteer work to make this process easier. The buildings on campus are all very nice and the dorm rooms are very well kept. The food in the dining halls, coffee shops, and Marquette Place, which features sushi, submarine sandwiches, a made-to-order burger restaurant, salads, bagels, and burritos, is very good. Many Milwaukee organizations and business support Marquette, and it seems like there is always an opportunity for a free t-shirt or notepad. The opportunities provided make the price tag well worth it.

Do you have any tips for prospective students?

Participate in as many activities as possible, especially during the days of freshman orientation! There is an opportunity to take a riverboat cruise, attend a Brewer game, learn how to salsa, play capture the flag at midnight, and go to a square dance. You get paired up with a partner and attend the dance together- it was a lot of fun! Join a group focusing on your major, play intramural sports, or volunteer. Just remember not to overload on activities before you know what you have time for. Most importantly, find a favorite place to study, such as the library, coffee shop, or academic building (Cudahy Hall is good). That will come in handy if you find that it's hard to concentrate in your dorm room.

Which types of students will excel at your college?

Make sure that you would be comfortable in an urban environment- the city of Milwaukee does have a population of more than 600,000. Students feel very safe on campus thanks to the blue light phones that allow you to call for emergency or non-emergency assistance (whenever you stand at a blue light, you should be able to see another), Public Safety officers, LIMOS (vans that transport students from one campus location to the next during night hours), and student safety officers walking in groups of two that can escort you to your destination. Be prepared to have a great time at Marquette! You will be well prepared for your future career.
