Review of Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts

from Chattanooga, TN

Describe your college in three sentences.

This school provides you with a classical background in art, but is very integrated with contemporary working artists. If you are looking for an undergraduate art program and enjoy making figurative artwork there is no better place to be! The sculpture program is especially unique.

Do you have any tips for prospective students?

Have a portfolio that shows you enjoy the human figure/anatomical studies. You might want to have to have some figure drawings and portrait studies in your portfolio for the faculty to see.

Do you find there’s enough academic rigor at your school?

Lyme has some pretty work intensive classes- many studio art classes involve a lot of projects and can last up to six hours. The academic classes at Lyme shouldn't be taken lightly either. If you think that art school should be a cakewalk then look elsewhere! This school is for committed art students. Never forget that your teachers are here to provide assistance.

Describe the dorm life at your college.

The college is currently building a dorm, but there is no Dorm Life. I live at a rental home and enjoy being with my roommates, but this is not the typical college experience.

Describe the food and dining at your college.

Lyme has a wonderful school cafeteria that serves up gourmet and specialty/ethnic dishes regularly. They have a if you don't like what you see, then ask! policy.

What’s there to do for fun at your college?

There are a lot of unorganized student events, but there is little to do in terms of clubs, student government, and the like. Outdoor activities are an option, but most fun things are organized independently of the college. Stay in touch with your peers and you will be fine! If you are a shy person also know that the college has regular trips to NYC and Boston to view art galleries and city happenings.

Do you feel you’re getting value for the money you’re spending on college?

Tiny class sizes, a lot of 1 on 1 attention, and amazing curriculum if you know you love figurative art/studio art. Comparable to the NY Academy of Art only this is a BFA program.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Thanksgiving Potluck, Spring Fling, Krieble Library, and the Brundage Commons

Which types of students will excel at your college?

Students with an interest in visual art particularly figurative art or art that involves the human figure. Long, work intensive studio classes will direct the less passionate elsewhere!

Are you involved in any clubs or activities?

Regular trips to NYC and Boston are a lot of fun, but be aware that most activities are student led.

Are you involved in any clubs or activities?

Nonexistent

How would you describe campus safety? Do you feel safe on campus?

Lyme's campus is almost too safe. If you are looking for a little gang violence you might want to to attend a different school.
