Review of Lamar University

from Lumberton, TX

Describe your college in three sentences.

Lamar University really gives tips and tricks to help you with your experience. At the beginning of each semester there's a fun Week of Welcome filled with free food, games, and activities to do. Although it's a smaller campus, there's enough of a university feel to make the college experience nice.

Do you have any tips for prospective students?

Just go to class, it really isn't hard to show up. Most classes have a grade with attendance, so right there that's an easy grade. Never shy away from asking your professor for help. Ever! It's not embarrassing and use their knowledge to get better grades.

Do you find there’s enough academic rigor at your school?

There's so many programs to help you pass or get tutored. In the library there's even a writing center to help any papers you have to turn in. Each class has its own difficulty, but the professors make it clear what they expect.

Describe the food and dining at your college.

There's not many options of places, so if you live on campus and gate a meal plan (you have to) then you might get bored. The buffet (dining hall) is great though. There's a lot of choices in there.

What’s there to do for fun at your college?

Visit the small pond, or sit in the quad. I wish there were more options.

Do you feel you’re getting value for the money you’re spending on college?

At the end of everything, you will still get your degree for a semi reasonable price. They are raising tuition in fall 2016, so that won't be fun.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

This year we started decorating a statue for every home football game we have. It's fun to walk past it and see it's ridiculous costume for the week. There's a bonfire in the fall and that's pretty nice.

Which types of students will excel at your college?

Any student! We hold the most international students in Texas. All are welcome and diversity is normal.

Are you involved in any clubs or activities?

There are plenty of clubs, although if you want to join you have to research, they won't do too much advertising.

Are you involved in any clubs or activities?

HUGE. The Greeks are everywhere. The first month expect to be asked several times.

How would you describe campus safety? Do you feel safe on campus?

Police station on campus, I always felt safe.
