Review of Hartwick College

from Windham, NY

Describe your college in three sentences.

Hartwick College has numerous of opportunities for their students for those who attend. Some courses are difficult, however there is plenty of help available in the writing center and office hours if needed. Small class sizes so students do not get lost in the class lectures.

Do you have any tips for prospective students?

- Arrive to class early or on time, do not be late. - School first and socializing later, partying may be fun, but grades are most important. - If you need help, seek it, do not be afraid to ask for help. - Do not judge a book by its cover, Hartwick may seem large with a lot of hills, but that is very easy to get used to once you know your way around, visit your colleges first, you will know what is right for you :) - Never change who you are for other people, if they cannot accept you for who you are, then it really is not worth your time, this goes for ANY campus! - Stay on top of your work, but also do not forget to have some fun once in a while!

Do you find there’s enough academic rigor at your school?

Class sizes are small with a lot of one-to-one, student to professor and there are plenty of help opportunities if you need it, so do not be afraid to ask for help. Professors usually know you by name and give you warnings in advance if there is an issue with your grade or if you are missing an assignment. College is not high school, you may have felt you did not need to study for exams, studying is very important to keep on top of your work and grades, minimizing your stress.

Describe the dorm life at your college.

Dorms are fairly larger than most colleges. Various number of dorm houses with singles, doubles, and suites as well as town houses. At Pine Lake there are also a numerous number of cabins. The dorms are for the most part safe and clean. I live in Oyaron at the moment, and although it is a far walk (given the name O'faren or O'yonder) it is a very peaceful and quiet atmosphere.

Describe the food and dining at your college.

Wide variety in food in a few stations. The food is very good. Breakfast usually opens at around 7:30am on thw weekdays, giving an opportunity to eat before class, it switches to lunch at around 11am and then dinner at 4pm. Weekends and break hours vary.

What’s there to do for fun at your college?

Oneonta is a small town, but if you look around, there are things to do. Hartwick itself had about 60 Clubs and Organizations. There are concerts, sports events, and other numerous activities.

Do you feel you’re getting value for the money you’re spending on college?

Very expensive, however the opportunities make up for it entirely, the professors are very one on one with the students with plenty of opportunities to get help if needed, and the college really tries to make the students feel at home and entertain them when going for their degree.

Which types of students will excel at your college?

I am a music major and I found out of all the colleges I applied and auditioned for, Hartwick was my home. Music majors have their own little hang out and are willing to help eachother with work or if another student needs a ride to a concert, they are their own little family outside the Hartwick community family. The music professors are fantastic and will critique you to help you improve. I would recommend this to any auditioning music major, as well as other students, the professors will really help you out, never be afraid to ask for help.

Are you involved in any clubs or activities?

There are over 65 Clubs and organizations on Hartwick Campus. I currently am part of the Fencing and gaming club and I really enjoy myself, I have heard great things about the other clubs and have seen their work, there is plenty of opportunity!

How would you describe campus safety? Do you feel safe on campus?

Campus Safety is very good at helping out in a situation. If a student has a leg injury or any injury incapable of walking to your class, Campus Safety will come take you to where you need to go, including the hospital if needed. They are able to be reached 24hrs a day through switchboard main office. As well as there are blue emergency polls, if there is an emergency and the button is puched, they respond immediately. I have never felt uncomfortable being on campus day or night.
