Georgia Southwestern is a has a small, but beautiful campus. At first glance, you might think the classes are easy, but most of them are very rigorous. Although Americus is a small town, there is something to do everyday on campus or in the community.
Do you have any tips for prospective students?
I would recommend coming to Preview Day before making a decision. I went to Preview Day with my parents and I did enjoy it. You'll get to meet students and faculty, eat in the cafeteria, tour the campus and see what the dorms look like!
Do you find there’s enough academic rigor at your school?
I say four stars because classes can be very hard and some professors have extremely high standards. Rest assured, you are not expected to behave like you're at an Ivy League, but the standards are higher than you might think at first glance. If you think this school will be something you can just show up for, don't apply because you will regret it. Online classes are great and some can be very easy, but most have more work than a regular class, strict deadlines and require pristine time management.
Describe the dorm life at your college.
i have lived in both Oaks and Magnolia. Oaks is great when you have a private room! The most annoying thing about dorms is the noise that other people make, but that's going to be at every school. Magnolia is VERY nice. It has a new kitchen and new washer/dryers on the bottom floor. The top floor has a computer room so you don't even have to go out of the building if you want to use the computers. In Oaks, the room doors don't lock automatically, but they do in Magnolia so be careful!
Describe the food and dining at your college.
Boar's Head is delicious and healthy! Chick fil a is great for fry cravings and fast service. Unfortunately, both are expensive. Busy students will run out of flex cash with half the semester left. I loathe the cafe. Fried chicken Thursday is okay. Burgers are good but rare, as are fries. The ice cream machine is amazing. Don't eat the pizza...but if you have to opt for cheese, not pepperoni.
The Starbucks is great and the POD store has good but expensive snacks. You can use flex cash at both.
What’s there to do for fun at your college?
It's a small town but there is always something going on. There are parties every weekend. Campus Activities Board has a plethora of events going on weekly, many of them involving food or free gift cards! If you like learning about culture, there are plenty of events usually held in the Nursing Auditorium with speakers from all over the world and students who participated in study abroad. Student Appreciation Day is SO much fun, free shirts, food, massages from trained specialists..it's just great. Show up early....like an hour early!
CanesConnect is great for finding events, as are the weekly emails with a list of everything going on. Tons of poster around campus too and check social media pages.
Do you feel you’re getting value for the money you’re spending on college?
GSW is the most affordable school in the state of Georgia. Residents of Alabama and Florida are eligible for in-state tuition. The school has a lot of scholarships you can apply for and federal work study. I am in the work study program and get to work on campus in the English Language Institute. We have free tutoring and online tutoring. There's a $500 scholarships anyone who wants to study abroad can apply for also!
Which types of students will excel at your college?
This school is great for nursing students. Not only is it one of the best Nursing Programs in the state, but also the country. The program is very competitive. The Nursing Building was built by Pres. Jimmy Carter's wife, Rosalynn Carter. It can turn into a hospital in less than twenty-four hours.
GSW is also great for students who want to be taught by professors, not TAs. We don't have TAs. Class are small, Nursing classes are a bit bigger. But you won't be in a class with more than 30-50 people. You can actually know your professor and classmates!
Are you involved in any clubs or activities?
There are several Greek Organizations. The main sororities are ZTA and KD.
How would you describe campus safety? Do you feel safe on campus?
Campus Safety are very polite and patrol campus a lot. There are emergency call boxes on campus. The campus is really safe. Dorms are only accessible by student ID, as is the halls. There is good lighting on campus for nighttime. The campus police are right by the Oaks and Magnolia dorms.
