Review of Emporia State University

Describe your college in three sentences.

If you're looking for a school that has the top programs in all its degrees, genuinely looks out for its students, and offers a lot of opportunities, Emporia is for you. It's a great transition school. Everyone there is positive, helpful and wants you to succeed!

Describe the dorm life at your college.

I love dorm life! Emporia has residential communities for education and business majors. I'm in the business community and it's awesome! We are able to work together in business classes and also make connections for our major that we'll have for our remaining time here. There is always something going on in the dorms, there are sinks in every dorm, ping pong tables, a tv on every floor. They're very nice rooms, and the activities they plan are so much fun!

Describe the food and dining at your college.

There's vegetarian options, although a little limited. Always pasta, salad, pizza, sandwhiches, dessert, and grill and main course options. There's also hex, which you get a certain amount of money to spend in and there's a subway, chipolte, and a few other options there. Finally there's a Starbucks with those same 'dining dollars'.

Which types of students will excel at your college?

It's great for students who come from small schools who are ready to be in a bigger environment. I've noticed that kids from bigger high school's struggle with how small the town is. If you are negative and don't like to participate this is not the school for you. It is very positive and welcoming all around

Do you feel you’re getting value for the money you’re spending on college?

ESU gave me enough scholarships that I haven't had to pay for college yet. There's always free events and free stuff to do, te education is solid, and it's a great place to be. It's worth every penny, and is one of the cheapest schools in the Midwest. Considering they have such awesome business, education, nursing, theatre, and other programs, it's a great value.

Do you have any tips for prospective students?

Put your best foot forward and don't be afraid to try something new Emporia is just a great place to be.

Are you involved in any clubs or activities?

I am in Greek life and I love it. It's not your typical sorority or fraternity life, they have a very strict no hazing policy and they judge on your personality when deciding new members rather than your looks I have been very pleased and proud to be a part of the Greek life here. They are all very positive and supportive of one another and work together to bring good to the campus.

Are you involved in any clubs or activities?

There are a ton of activities for every sort of kid. There's even a Nerf gun club. And it's very very easy to start your own club if you don't like any of the ones on campus.

Do you find there’s enough academic rigor at your school?

So far I've only taken general ed classes with one major requirement. However, they like to spread out your gen eds over four years so you're not buried with major requirements and can also change your major more easily if you decide you don't like the classes you're taking. The teachers really work with you if you put in the effort.

What’s there to do for fun at your college?

There's something all the time of you look hard enough! Emporia has a zoo, nature walks, muesuems, a small mall and a movie theatre. The college itself always has events like the tye dye runs and finals week carnivals. The Main Street also has events to try to get you involved! If you can't find something to do you're not trying hard enough!

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

There's the 'stinger's up' hand sign, and then there is the experience which is an orientation event during the summer and then there's the orientation which is just a whole bunch of fun activities. Other than that I can't think of anything weird besides there's one arch you're not supposed to walk under.

How would you describe campus safety? Do you feel safe on campus?

People say you're not supposed to walk alone at dark on campus but the worst I've received or if you catcalls I feel very safe at Emporia. If you don't feel safe there are the blue lights everywhere on campus to be sure that you are safe and police and safety is right next to the freshman dorms. The police will even come help you with a flat tire or any other type of trouble even if you're Across town.
