Ziqi's Review
Review of Brown University
In which ways do you feel you are learning and growing?
Brown’s Open Curriculum is certainly the best tool for any student. It offers me the choice of what to study and in what ways I should be studying. In a sense it is the type of “meta-studying” that I always yearn for: learn to plan out my future, learn to how to learn, and learn to employ the correct resources to help me develop myself fully.
What tips can you share with prospective students?
Almost everyone in this community is lively and receptive. Never fear to write an email or go to ask a person face-to-face even if he/she is a dean or a renowned professor — they’re simply so nice and open to questions. I’d even say that they anticipate questions and answering them are their pleasure.
What qualities do you have that have best prepared you for success at this institution?
Self-motivation is a big thing here. People are chill and so does the atmosphere so occasionally you might find yourself too relaxed for the upcoming challenges. Keep the gear up!
How would you describe the food and dining options?
There are three major dining halls: two buffets and one wok/miscellaneous. There are also a bakery room, a smoothie/salad/sushi room, a cafe, and a late night cafeteria. Buffets are of average-up quality; woks are almost always good; smoothies and bakeries are student’s most loved; and the cafeteria solves a tremendous amount of late night studying hunger.
In what clubs or organiziations have you participated and how have they impacted your overall experience?
A cappella is a culture here: there are more than a dozen a cappella groups here at brown and once in a while we together perform in an event called the “arch sing”. It is one of the best way to socialize with a close circle of people because you’re doing some serious but artistic things with a bunch of friends!
How does this institution support campus safety or mental health and wellness programs?
Safewalk is a thing here. Operates from 9pm to 2am almost everyday during the semester. Police patrols and security guards are also seen starting from around 9 or 10.
