Review of Blue Mountain Christian University

Describe your college in three sentences.

Blue Mountain College is a great place to gain experience in various opportunities. They present opportunities that are not only relevant to your major, but also those that are compatible to one's interests and help to develop social skills. Blue Mountain is focused on the interests and goals of the students which is evident in the encouragement and servitude of the faculty and staff.

Do you have any tips for prospective students?

Take advantage of every opportunity that strikes any interest. It will make adjusting to campus life more enjoyable because you will find people that you are compatible with and being active in school will aid in finding the right job in the future. Do not hide out in your dorm room all of the time. College is stressful so take the time to unwind at events going on around campus. Try new things. Whether it is food or an activity, try to branch out and develop your character a little with your new environment. It makes coping easier and maybe even enjoyable. Plan study times. It is easy to get wrapped up in homework and other activities, but too much of either can take away from the best of your college experience. Organization will help decision making as things come up.

Do you find there’s enough academic rigor at your school?

Each professor is passionate regarding their area of expertise and strive to relate it to both the student taking a class as a general requirement and the student majoring on that particular subject. Blue Mountain uses older and methods of teaching such as lecturing, research papers, essays, Blackboard assignments, speeches, PowerPoint presentations and more. Each teacher uses what that believe is ideal for their students and often make adjustments depending on the needs of the students and the course requirements.

Describe the dorm life at your college.

The dorms provide an adequate amount of space, but do not provide much storage. Maintenance men work during the day and will fill repair request in a timely manner. Girls are not allowed upstairs in the boys dorms and boys are not allowed upstairs in the girls dorms, unless they are moving in or have been giving permission by the dorm resident (or dorm mom/dad). Quiet hours are generally followed and are heavily enforced during the week of finals. The dining hall fee is currently included with the housing fee. The dorm president has formed events such as movie nights for girls to get together for a short period of time to relax outside of their room without feeling as though they were still at school. Overall the dorms are nice.

Describe the food and dining at your college.

Blue Mountain has been making changes recently to improve the meal quality, which has proven to be a success in several areas. There are options such as the salad bar, pizza making station, sandwich station, ice cream, and then the food line where they offer a different meat and vegetable at every meal. They have recently added a soda machine and peach mango tea. Occasionally they hold special banquets for specific groups, but the dining hall is generally a good setting to meet up with friends.

What’s there to do for fun at your college?

There is always something going on on campus between the three girls societies, two guys societies, intramural sports, basketball, baseball, track and field, softball, tennis, chorale concerts, theater productions, Baptist Student Union and Student Body Association events. The SUB and Gal-ry have become popular gathering spots with the SUB's televisions, ping pong tables and pool table, then the workout equipment and the Mountain Fountain coffee shop newly founded in Gal-ry. It is easy to keep busy on the mountain, but if you want to get off campus Tupelo it is about 45 minutes away.

Do you feel you’re getting value for the money you’re spending on college?

I will admit there are some things that could change to make Blue Mountain more pleasurable, but the opportunities alone make this campus so wonderful. It holds on to the traditional morals and values the history of the school, but this campus is not out-dated. It is maintained properly with care and concern for the present occupants and those to come in the future to Blue Mountain. Those who have left Blue Mountain often return to visit or pay tribute to the campus and I believe that many in the future will do the same.
