James E. Sherman Memorial Scholarship
Battle Creek Community Foundation
Jim Sherman graduated from Battle Creek Central High School in 1955 and attended Western Michigan University. Participation in extra-curricular school activities provided him first-hand lessons in the importance of responsibility, discipline, fairness, and respect. Jim was a superb craftsman in the printing field, a good husband, father and grandfather. His family (wife Lou Ann and sons, Jim and Steve) established the James E. Sherman Memorial Scholarship in Jim's memory. Each year this scholarship will provide assistance for graduates and/or graduating seniors of the Battle Creek Public Schools that are seeking educational opportunities beyond high school. Considerations are: character, citizenship, emphasis on someone who may not have the chance/opportunity to succeed without scholarships; potential to succeed academically, financial need. One letter of recommendation is required from the applicant’s teacher, counselor, principal, agency volunteer supervisor, or employer that specifically addresses the applicant’s character, citizenship, work ethic, and ability to succeed academically. The student must maintain active, consistent enrollment in a college, university, or technical school (full or part-time) in order to renew the award through reapplication.
