Review of The Art Institutes

from N. Huntingdon, PA

Do you feel you’re learning a lot?

I have only completed two quarters at The Art Institute of Pittsburgh but I have learned so much during that time. I am a photography major and I have learned a lot about the history of photography, past and present photographers, and also different photographic processes. As for the hands on learning, I have learned several techniques for photographing different people and situations, and also how to thoroughly use my camera.

Do you enjoy the experience at your school?

I really like the school itself. It is very hands on, the teachers are nice and they help you out and give you individual attention, and I like the location of the school because it is in the middle of the city, which is a new experience for me. However, I do not like my roommates, therefore I would rather commute than live on campus, although it is helpful at times.

Do you feel you’re getting value for the money you’re spending on college?

Yes the school is very expensive, which includes positives and negatives. The positives include a nice building with tools, equipment, etc. available to the students, most without charge. There is also free tutoring available for students. However, the school store is expensive on top of what you are already paying to go here. For example, I needed a pack of gray markers and the ones I found at the school store were $32.

Do you have any tips for prospective students?

Make sure you apply for tons of scholarships, grants, and loans to help pay for school. And try to pay back the loans a little at a time so they are not so overwhelming whenever you graduate. Try to make friends with your roommates (if they arent that bad) and make friends at school. Having people to talk to and hang out with will help with homesickness and give you something to do at school. Also, get your name out there! Networking is KEY! The more you put your name out there and show off your work, the better chance you have of getting hired at a good job.

Which types of students will excel at your college?

This school is excellent for students who learn hands-on and don't want to just sit in a classroom. Yes you will have some core classes, such as math and english, where you have to sit in a classroom, but the majority of your classes pertain to your major and the work in those classes will be what you are interested in.
