Review of Northumbria University

from Arnold, MD

Describe your college in three sentences.

The city Northumbria University is in is Newcastle, which is a fun, yet safe, city in the North East of England. I didn't like the campus as much as I liked Newcastle University's campus, but there were some very interesting courses. Northumbria is a very hands-on college, probably because it was once a polytechnic.

Do you find there’s enough academic rigor at your school?

It is less research intensive and academic, but because it is an English college, it's academic standards are already high in comparison to your typical American college.

Describe the dorm life at your college.

The dorms are bigger than what you would typically find in America. They are also in a good part of the city, right by the campus.

Describe the food and dining at your college.

Northumbria is located in Newcastle, which has an excellent array of restaurants and pubs from many different cultures. Newcastle is also a relatively affordable city, so getting a nice meal won't cost you an arm and a leg. I can particularly recommend the Big Mussel.

What’s there to do for fun at your college?

Newcastle is well-known for it's excellent night-life. There are many pubs and clubs one can go to and have fun. On the more cultural side, there is the Theater Royal, The Live Theater, and the multiple concert halls of the Sage Gateshead building. There are also plenty of sports you can be engaged in, including Roller Derby. During the winter, many of the theaters will put on what is known as a Pantomime, a very British form of comedy, that typically parodies some fairy-tale or another, and has a long-standing tradition of men playing the dame. It's interactive and good fun for all.

Do you feel you’re getting value for the money you’re spending on college?

Good academics and opportunities in an affordable city, for about as much money as it would cost one to go to an out-of-state school.

Which types of students will excel at your college?

Night-owls and party animals, who are still ready to do work. Also good for people who like a more hands on approach.

Are you involved in any clubs or activities?

None.

How would you describe campus safety? Do you feel safe on campus?

Northumbria, and Newcastle in general, are very safe.
