Review of Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts

from Groton, CT

Describe your college in three sentences.

Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts is a very small and intimate school, which provides exceptional teaching skills in every artistic form to help understand art in every way. This college teaches so much in any artistic subject in such a small amount of time without putting anyone behind. The students at the Lyme Academy are very friendly and helpful, especially with criticisms which makes it easier to improve.

Do you have any tips for prospective students?

Everybody has come from a different high school that has taught a lot more or a lot less art classes, so don't be intimidated if a classmate seems to know more in art. Always be updated on when gallery and student shows happen; the most important thing any art student could do is submit art for these shows. Be confident, never conceited. Be ready to explain your ideas at any given time, don't create anything you wouldn't want to talk about. Please participate during critiques; this will give you a better grade as well as confidence to speak your mind for the future.

Do you find there’s enough academic rigor at your school?

There is so much to learn, and this college teaches everything about art from techniques, to history. It's surprising to see how much someone can do and how much they improve in just one semester. It's more than exciting to learn new techniques as well as basic teachings and understand how it helps with what your intended major is. The students take the learning and their art very seriously, which provides a comfortable learning environment.

Describe the dorm life at your college.

The townhouses are directly across the street and were made in 2012, so they're very new and very spacious. It's perfect for those who don't have a car to drive, because the walk to the school takes about six minutes. It's almost useless to drive! The best thing about these townhouses is the fact that they cause students to get together and visit each other which makes finding friends quicker and easier. If anybody needed help with cooking, or had to borrow a vacuum, a friendly classmate is literally right next door.

Describe the food and dining at your college.

The cafeteria is run by students as well as a friendly chef. The food is vegetarian, gluten, anti-diary, and vegan friendly every day. The wait for an order doesn't take long, and the prices are reasonable. The best place to hang out and eat is in the Commons room which has tables, chairs, couches, a ping pong table, a piano, and a large flat screen TV.

What’s there to do for fun at your college?

There are more than enough activities to do at this school! Every Thursday a visiting artist comes during lunch to present their works and backgrounds. Saturdays there are free figure drawing classes. Sometimes game and movie nights are scheduled on Fridays. On warmer days, the school gets together at the Florence Griswold Museum for ice cream. There is a schedule written on a white board in the Commons for everyone to keep updated.

Which types of students will excel at your college?

Anybody from any age can attend this college and that makes learning so much more interesting. Anybody interested in painting, sculpting, drawing, or illustration should definitely attend this college. Even those who know nothing about art can learn and do and improve incredibly in just one semester.

How would you describe campus safety? Do you feel safe on campus?

The college is located in old Lyme, Connecticut which has a crime rate that's less than 0%. Security guards walk around the school until 2am. No student has seriously injured themselves on any artist, wood shop, or kitchen equipment.
